I was using my cruise control and when I released it I lost my gas petal only could coast. The cable had come out of the track. Is there something I can do to it to prevent it from happening again.
if the cable came out of the groove in the throttle it usually points to a partially sticking throttle, when it sticks and you release the pedal the cable is left slack and sticking out, when the throttle loosens the cable can come out of its track, make sure the throttle moves smoothly - that the cable runs smoothly in its sheath and clean the entire mechanism with a toothbrush and some alcohol/petrol, when its all clean lightly oil the mechanism and wipe up any excess oil.
If it sticks and does this again I would suspect the throttle is worn and needs replacing. But service the throttle (clean/oil) first and see if its any better.
Theres a possibility the throttle could stick open, if this happens (dangerous!!!) turn the key off one click to kill the engine but not lock the steering.
Have it in mind before you test that the throttle could stick so you're not shocked if it happens and can turn the key one click without being in a panic.
