If you look below the fin on the lower unit you will see some holes on both sides. their is a adaptor you can buy that will cover these holes and it will hook up to your water hose. you can get it at academe or boat supple. jerry

Ive got a 1985 boat its got a omc 3.0 liter inline 4cyl.181cid omc motor.iv egot a water leak behind the bell housing is ther a freeze plug behind it or what could be causing my leak

Not sure about yours, but some have a inline transmission cooler. Some engines have freeze plugs in the rear of the engine. Regardless of what exactly leaking the bell housing and/or transmission will have to be at least loosened and slid back if not removed in order to SEE where your leak is. Check for any hoses going in or around the housing. If there is , cut the water off and briefly run the engine and trans. If not leak then you know its in the cooling system. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Just bought a used boat, 1966 sportscraft with an evinrude 2 stroke motor, don't know how to test the motor without going into the water. don't know much about boats

Hi. If you just want to run the motor then you can do it in you driveway. Go to a sports store with boating equipment and ask for "Muffs" to run your boat motor out of water. You can see a pictures of outboard motor muffs on google images:

Take the muffs and place them over the water intakes located above the propeller (look like vents on each side). Hook a garden hose up the muffs and start water flow. Make sure nothing is near the propeller. Make sure to pump the bulb in the fuel line to the motor until it stiffens. Crank the motor. When the motor starts, you should see water start to flow out of the back of the motor near the cover and out of the center of the propeller with the exhaust. You must keep water flow to the motor using the muffs while it is running or it will burn up.

Looking for water inlet holes on my omc outdrive

You should have slots on either side of the lowest part of the outdrive, above the skag or fin. There can be a difference if you have what is called a closed cooling system. The closed system has a radiator in front of the engine like an auto. The water from the lake goes through heat exchangers and does not make direct contact with the water in the radiator. The older open system uses lake water directly and it goes through the slots on the lower unit.

Boat not responsive

hi, thats a little motor for a big boat. how big is the boat? you can try changing the timing by loosening the distributor cap and turning it slightly to see if that helps or you can get a different prop that has less pitch on the blades which will spin the prop faster in the water and keep you up in powerband better. maybe call a marine boat shop and tell them your problem, maybe they have a trick or two. happy boating J
