Question about 2003 Yamaha V Star Classic

1 Answer

My bike died while driving. Checked fuel filter, spark to plugs, installed new plugs, It used to click for several seconds when I turned on the key, assumed this was a fuel primer of some sort. It no longer does that. Would it be the fuel pump? While we were checking for spark to fuel pump we heard a pop. Would it of fried the relay or could it be a fuse someplace that we've missed. Thank you for your input. It is very much appreciated.

    Its a 650

  • rbest Oct 18, 2013

Are assuming its the fuel pump but now with the pop after checking the power I am wondering if we popped a fuse. We checked all the fuses we could find and they were all intact.

  • rbest Oct 18, 2013

There are other things plugged into the relay, if those things work would it be correct in assuming that its okay?

IT sounds like it is the pickups not working (.telling it to spark) if not then it will be CDI UNIT OR ENGINE GENERATOR COILS

SOURCE: Electronic Fuel Pump

It turned out that the ignition key was faulty and it cut out my fuel pump and power to my spark plug but all other electrics worked. Tried my spare key and could hear fuel pump working pressed starter and it fired up how bizarre is that. so problem sorted.

Capacitor Discharge Ignition modules control the spark timing to the engine based on the inputs received from various sensors. There will be no spark if the CDI is bad

Get a BRAND NEW plug and recheck for spark. Be sure plug is grounded to engine. By the way, FTjoe (above) has some very good questions. The sator is not involved here. The dealer can check the CDI usually for free.

SOURCE: yamaha fazer is miss firing

I have had the same problem. It is not the spark plugs - although it is always a ggod idea to change them to eliminater them as a potential issue.
The Spark plug holder can be a problem - in my case the wires leading from the ignition lead into the holder - had started to work loose- a common problem apparently. Solved by changing the holders.

Immobilizer is shutting the car down most likely. Try a different key see if it happens to the other key or bring it to volvo and have them get a new key for it. And have them check the anntenna for the immobilizer. The immobilizer system will shut the car off if it does not sense the correct wireless signature from the key, after a few seconds. You can take the key out of the ignition then reinsert it, try again see if it starts.

More common problems not volvo specific:Plugged fuel injectors maybe, turbo controller problem maybe. Or an ignition control module problem after it heats up. Hard to tell.

I used to have that same exact model and year of car and it had a turbo controller problem that would only be noticeable if at high altitude, 5000ft or above and engine under significant load( climbing a long hill) the engine would surge up and down constantly. Replaced the turbo controller and it was fixed.

Good luck with that

Ive just put a anew battery and plugs on my bike, but it still wont start,i have checked and there is a spark on the plug and the bike is turning over but it isnt firing

Remove lh cover from air filter ( chrome cover) and spraysome easy start into the housing while turning the engine over, you could also soak a cloth in fuel, and hold it in the ail filter housing with filter removed, this way when you attemt to start it the fuel on the cloth will enter the engine and hopfully your bike will start, quickly remove the cloth or the engine will flood, if the bike starts hold the throttle at a steady 3000rpm for a miniute or two, until the bike will idle if your bike runs then stops after this, you may try draining the fuel from the carb by undoing the screw at the lowest point of the carb, let it drain completely, in severe cases you may have to remove and cleanout carb

1980 Yamaha XS 400 Special First, How do you tell if it has an electronic ignition? Second, Can't get it to start. Have put gas in spark plug holes. Didn't hit. Bike has been setting on a dirt...

First, you need a good battery. The bike does have electronic ignition. Soak the carbs in denatured alcohol for two hours after removing the float bowls, then clean with spray cleaner. Spray into every large and small hole you can find. Remove the rubber diaphragm from the center of carb prior to cleaning. New diaphragms are $196 each. Check all fuses. Put in new spark plugs, NGK-BP7ES. Clean the air filter. Get a can of spray starter fluid and spray on the air filter. The rubber mounts for the carbs are likely to be a problem once it gets running. It looks like they are still available at Babbitt's, $53 each. If un-carburetored air can get into the joints it will lean the fuel mix and cause uncontrollable high idle.

Before you sink a lot of money into the bike, check for spark. If spark is present, coast the bike down a good sized hill without any spark plugs being installed. Put the bike in 3rd gear as you go downhill then let the clutch out to turn the engine over. Now ( using the clutch lever ), shift through all the gears then neutral. If the bike will not shift properly it likely has a bent shift fork. I can't find any forks avaiable. With a bad tranny I would put it back in the dirt floor building and find a newer bike. Here is a link to Babbitt's. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Hi, Jami and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!

CAR CUT OFF WHEN DRIVING

Have u checked for spark? U can pull a plug wire off, install a plug in the wire (saves u from taking a plug out), place plug on metal surface, crank engine while someone watches for a spark. If no spark check coil and ignitor (inside distributor). If u have spark check to see if u have gas making it to plugs. Crank engine over (no more than 10 seconds, give it a 10 second rest, try again for 10 sec. etc, ) After doing this for several minutes, pull a plug and check it--it should be wet from gas. If the plug is dry, u aren't getting gas (change fuel filter, check fuel pump). countrycurt0
