Under the seat you will find a dog bone shape fuse. Attached to it is a white wire approx. 3/16" in diameter. This white wire attaches to the alternator. Check for loose connecting or open ground in the alternator.

These are generally on the same fuse and run through a voltage stabilizer to stop fluctuation due to charging, could be the stabilizer that's gone faulty.

Have a 1985 Honda GoldWing limited edition 1200 the fuel gauge reads empty but is full of fuel .can anyone tell me what to look for ?

Hi, Jay you could have a faulty sending unit or gauge, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left-hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace the gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. If your fuel gauge registers the incorrect amount of fuel in the tank you can try bending the float arm the necessary amount for a more accurate reading. Hi, Larry and the usual suspects, are:
1. Blown instrument fuse.
2. A bad ground in the gauge circuit.
3. Faulty wiring before or after the fuse.
4. Faulty dash wiring harness connector.
4. Faulty wiring or connector between the fuse and sensor.
5. Faulty wiring or connector between the sensor and gauge.
6. Gauge sensor has failed.
7. The gauge has failed.

I have a 1982 honda goldwing gl 1100 and my fuel and temp gauge work only some of the time. and could you tell me where the meter voltage regultor is located?

I have three Gl1000's and have never solved this problem with one of my bikes. I replaced the complete tank shroud with all the electronics between two of the bikes. On the tank shroud there is a 7 volt voltage regulator and a 4 diode pack ( one of the diodes is for the fuel gauge/temp sender). The gauges run at 7 volts. It problem may be related to either a cracked wire under the insulation of the harness. Or the contact base of the ignition switch (I had to disassemble and scrape the contacts with a pocket knife on the side of the road once to continue riding.) I know my fan is working to cool the engine when hot and the fuel gauges (the actual gauges) read differently on all three wings (Empty is usually half tank). Since i have a reserve for the fuel I do my best just to ignore the gauges since they are redundant and not necessary. However if you find the magic bullet that fixes this problem please let me know. I hope I have given you some useful information.

1993 Honda GL 1500 SE Gold Wing dash lights not working

Hi, Anonymous if you have a dash or instrument light that is out and you have confirmed that the bulb is good then you need to do some quick diagnostics all you need is a test light and a wiring diagram usually found in the back of your service or owners manual.
1. Make sure your battery is fully charged with "CLEAN" and "TIGHT" connections and the instrument light fuse is not blown.
2. Inspect the bulb socket for corrosion and clean as necessary, a spray can of electrical contact cleaner and compressed air works the best.
3. Confirm your test light is working properly by connecting one end to the battery negative post and touching battery positive post with the sharp probe, the test light should illuminate.
4. With the ignition turned on to confirm you have power to the bulb socket by connecting your test light to battery negative or ground and probe the center contact, the test light should illuminate if not you need to check the integrity of the switch or sending unit the light represents, if that is ok then you have a short in the wiring between the component and the light bulb, if all is ok proceed to the next step.
5. Confirm you have a good ground to the light bulb socket by connecting the test light to battery positive and probe any metal part of the socket housing, the test light should illuminate, if not you need to find the short and repair as necessary.
6. Inspect the integrity of the spring loaded positive contact insulation tab by pushing against it with your test light to see if it goes down and springs back fully to it's operating position again contact cleaner and compressed air works best to restore proper function.
7. If your bike has a lot of mileage the vibration can cause bulbs to become loose in the socket by wearing down the soldered contact thus loosing spring pressure from the tab and eventually stop making contact this can be fixed by replacing the bulb or putting a drop of solder on the worn out end to ensure contact.
8. If all of your dash lights are out but are good then you most likely have a faulty connection to the dash wiring harness, inspect the connector for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets.
