Will only run on full choke

This is a fuel supply issue. Don't use the saw until you find the problem.
Things to check are:
fuel filter, fuel line crack, impulse line, carb needs work, air leak to engine. Etc.

A leaking fuel line , fuel pressure regulator leaking . Open the hood an see if you can see something leaking there on that side of the engine !

Craftsman chainsaw will not keep running

Most saws will have a high, low and idle screw adjustments.

First make sure we are dealing with a clean air filter, clean with air or tap air filter and brush to remove saw dust. Replace fuel if it is a season old or older. (Fuel filter replacement if it has seen years of use.)
2nd GENTLY turn the high screw clock wise until it bottoms out and then counter clock wise 1 and a quarter turns.
3rd do the same for the low idle.

It should run and idle at this point, let it warm up before making final adjustments. If it dies when giving it gas then more than likely it will need further adjustment on the low idle screw.

If it is really stubborn, often times the the ports are full of sludge from the bad fuel. I prefer to remove the bar and chain especially for the novice. Start the saw, secure with another set of hands if need be, turn the idle screw in to quicken the speed a little. Now you can work the low and high screws back and forth 1/4 turn while the saw is running, periodically giving it full throttle. That should be enough to dislodge buildup replace bar and chain and then your final adjustment.

If not you may have to look else where as in an air leak.

Good luck and be careful!

My Brand new Stihl ts420 cut saw wont run full throtle, smokes white, and leaks fuel out of exhaust filter. it runs like the choke is half on.

This sounds like the carb is flooding, there is a rubber tipped needle under the metering side of the carb, this may be leaking, before replacing the needle make sure the air filter is not blocked, replace with a new filter and try again

My saw has fire,it just will not start, does not even to attempt to start,it is getting gas I smell it flooding .

Take the carb off and you will see the little rubber mounting on the fuel tank.I mean the connection between the carburator and the fuel tank. Shake a little bit the whole saw. If there is gasoline coming out on the rubber mounting than it means that the fuel tank respirator filter is dirty and air cannot exit the fuel tank so it will get gas out at the rubber mounting because the pressure inside. To solve your problem for the moment try to push out this little filter. Take off the gas tank cap and look inside , you will see an alloy piece with a hole in the middle. Use a very thin screwdriver or something similar and push it through this hole , this way you will push out the filter on the other side. Do not use a drill bit. I did it, bad idea.

Have fun !

I have a stihl 044, older saw and its not running properly. When I try to start it with the full chock, I get fuel ranning out of the muffler every time I try to start it. I take off the air filter and...

I would say it is flooding, you realy need to pressure test the carb to check the seating of the inlet needle, a simple bulb tester is all you need, connect it to the fuel inlet on the carb ( where the fuel hose is connected ), pump approx 2/3 psi into the carb, it should hold this steady with no leak, any leaks then you will have to fit a new inlet needle, let us know how the test goes.

Saw has lost power. Consumes a lot of fuel. Runs good from half full to empty but it surges during this time. I checked and cleaned all around the and drive, the air filter, and checked the spark plug....

There are very few things that will increase fuel consumption, blocked spark arrestor in the muffler ( metal gauze in the exhaust out let ) blocked air filter, part blocked exhaust port ( remove the muffler and check ) if the fuel tank is seperated from the chain oil tank with a gasket you may have a leakage between the two ( is the chain oil getting thinner and smell of fuel, other problems may be in the carb, leaking inlet needle, this will require a carb pressure test to prove, if you have a small bulb pressure tester, remove the fuel hose from the carb and connect the tester, put approx 2 psi in, the carb should hold this with no pressure loss.

My car is smelling like gas.

From where? you haven't given enough info, but put a large piece of flattened cardboard under the car to see if any is leaking. You will then be able to see what general area it's coming from--if there is a leak.

It could be a fuel injector(s) or even something very simple. When is the last time you had a tune-up, including a new fuel filter? If it's been more than two years, it's overdue. That means new oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs. If your car has a distributor, you should also replace the distributor cap and rotor (cap).

Try to locate a specific area where the smell is coming from. Breathing gas fumes is not healthy!

Air filter full of fuel

Sounds like your injectors are going bad. It concerns me that you have a odor of gas in the trunk since all of the fuel lines run under the car. Check your fuel filler line for a leak.
