1994 harley 883 won't stay running with choke in. Then back fires when i have the throttle going? is there a way i can clean the carb myself?

This actually sounds like an intake leak, most likely where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads.

With it at idle, spray a little carb cleaner at the joint between the above mentioned two, and if the idle picks up, there's a leak.

This is common on Harleys, as over time, the rubber seals break down with the engine heat.

Whats the best way too clean a cv carb on a 01 sportster its back fireing when i jump on it ...thanx

Hi Thomas, if you have a carburator the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system (gas cap).
2. Inlet system air leak.
3. Vacuum piston malfunction.
4. Accelerator pump leaking or no output.
5. Plugged bowl vent.
6. Fuel level (float chamber) too low.
7. Restriccted fuel supply passages.
8. Plugged jets or passages.
9. Worn or damaged needle or needle jet.
10. Enrichner valve not seated or leaking.

98 Sportster 883. starts & w/ choke, won't take throttle or choke off w/o stalling. Bike sat for a long time (years). Used Gumout to clean carb b4 pulling tank, cleaning & put fresh fuel -...

No, nothing else to check. You need to completely disassemble the carb and clean it out. When gasoline left in the float bowl evaporated, it left behind the gummy additives that the refinery puts in the gasoline. This mess has clogged the jets and small passageways in the carb. The reason it runs with the "choke" out is that it is not a real "choke" but rather an "enricher circuit". It has it's own air passageway and fuel metering "jet" in the float bowl.

Good Luck

Replace my enrichment cable 883 sportster 1998.do i haave to remove carb.

Yes, you must remove the carb to change the cable. Right where the cable goes into the carb, there is a plastic nut deal that screws into the carb. Take the air filter off, take the enricher cable out of it's holder on the left side of the bike, disconnect the throttle and idle cables and the fuel lines, and the carb just pulls right out of the manifold. Use a 14mm wrench to take the cable out. You'll have to take the spring and plunger off of your old cable and put it on the new cable. I'd put a new manifold seal, rubber seal on the manifold where the carb plugs in, if I were you. They have a tendency to create a vacuum leak after they've been run a while and you pull the carb out. They don't cost that much.

Good Luck
Steve

I have a 1993 sportster that has died on me once and seems to hesitate from time to time.

This could be a carb issue. If it is a CV type carb, make sure the vacuum hose to the VOES is in good shape, no cracks or holes etc., make sure the intake boots are not leaking by spraying WD-40 onto the boots while engine is idling, if idle speeds up, you have a vacuum leak. If all this stuff checks out ok, you will probably have to remove and clean the inside of your carb.

I have a 1996 883 Harley Sportster with a S&S carb (E) . When ideling its ok , but as soon as you try to excelerate it cut right out . Could it be the excelerator pump ?

Suspect items are the float level, accelerator pump, acc. pump inlet and exit check valves, off idle circuit, and main jet circuit. Be certain that you have no intake leaks.

96 883 sportster with 3000 miles only. Will run only with enrichment knob pulled out when i throttle up it wants to die and spits fuel out carb and pre ignites in carb ran well when was stored not run...

Carbureted Harleys that will only run with the enrichment knob pulled out require a partial disassembly as the slow jet is most like clogged and/or the entire carburetor and fuel system needs to be cleaned &serviced.

I have a 1996 883 HD XL sportster.it will start but then dies out.if I crank on and of the throttle I can keep it running. But when I stop it dies out.could this be something plugged in the Carb,or vacuum...

Yes, it could be either something plugged in the carb or vacuum leaks. If the bike has been sitting for over three months, it's probably the jets are plugged in the carb. You'll need to pull the carb and go through it. Use that pressurized carb cleaner to clean out the jets and all passageways in the carb.

Make sure you put a new carb to intake seal on the intake before you put the carb back on. Also, check the hose that comes off the backside of the carb. It supplies vacuum to two things, the VOES switch up between the tanks and the vacuum operated fuel petcock. Make sure the hose has not cracked or come loose from either of these. I at least one occasion, I found the vacuum operated petcock to be leaking air. The bike would not idle. It would run but would pop and spit back through the carb. I had to take it out of the tank, disassemble it, and reassemble. After that, it worked but I don't know for how long. I suggest replacing the vacuum operated petcocks with manually operated petcocks. I've only seen one leak air but I've seen lots of them leave riders stranded with full fuel tanks but no fuel in the carb. They will malfunction and leave you stranded.
