I think you are referring to "rocker boxes" on your Sporty. Replace the rubber gaskets between the lower plate and the upper plate. If the lower plate is leaking, you will have to remove the lower plate with the rocker arms and the push rods.

Trouble with throttle bogging down on a 1999 883 harley sportster

Hi Anonymous, if you have a carburator the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system (gas cap).
2. Inlet system air leak.
3. Vacuum piston malfunction.
4. Accelerator pump leaking or no output.
5. Plugged bowl vent.
6. Fuel level (float chamber) too low.
7. Restriccted fuel supply passages.
8. Plugged jets or passages.
9. Worn or damaged needle or needle jet.
10. Enrichner valve not seated or leaking.
Good luck and have nice day.

Have an opportunity to but a 2000 883 hugger very cheap. It has a gasket leak on front top cylinder. Will this be an expensive, complicated fix? The bike has just under 10,000 miles. Were there any...

That depends on which gasket is leaking. If it's just a rocker box gasket, it's just a minor problem and if you fix it yourself, the total costs is less than $20. If it's a head gasket, the cost is a bit more and you'll probably want to have that done in a shop, I'm estimating cost about about $200-$250. As far as I know, there were no recalls. The rocker box gasket leaking is more common than the head gasket leakage but neither are what I call major expenses. If the head gasket is leaking, if you rev the engine just a bit when it's cold, sometimes it will pop and you can see fire jump from beneath the head. More than likely, it's just a rocker box gasket leaking.

Good Luck
