Question about Harley Davidson Motorcycles

1 Answer

Troubleshooting guide My motor is sputtering and backfiring between idle and 3k rpm. I also was riding home last night and I lost all electrical power on the bike and the motor shut down. I just replaced the battery and I am thinking that the negative battery terminal wire is broken and not making a good connection and causing these issues. I ran the bike at idle for 20 minutes with no problems at all, then I started to ride home and in the 3.5 miles home the bike died with loss of everything electrical. So I pulled over sat there for a minute or two and then I had power again, fired the old girl up and started riding again. Made it home safely. it is a 1996 Harley dyna super glide. any help would be great. I am going to start by replacing my negative battery cable.

Thank you for the responses. It turned out to be a rather simple fix. although not the best fix. I have three wires going in to a connector under the seat. I am guessing this was done when they put the apes on my bike and had to redo the harness. These wires became exposed when the electrical got old and slip up and away from the the back of the connector and my negative battery cable was also pushed up against the frame right at the connector, which caused some more exposed wires due to electrical tape failure. I have gotten a longer cable and routed it differently through the frame. I for now until I have some more times on my hands have just re-taped the three wires, but I did do them individually before cocooning them up for extra protection. To be honest this was kind of a fun problem to troubleshoot. Some of the other symptoms where as follows. 1) even after being warmed up the bike was sputtering in the rpms below 3000. 2) would lose all power to the bike (only when actually being ridden, if i was just sitting there idling (because i ran for 20 minutes at idle) the bike would run fine) I have taken it on a 60 mile round trip and back and forth to school since and "Harriet" is running just fine. I thank everybody again for your help.

SOURCE: Electrical problem

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls try recharging the battery again. Remove the connector to the voltage regulator. Start/run the bike. If it lasts more than "3-5 minutes" then you have just confirmed a defective regulator. The voltage regulator would look something like below image.

This page may give you additional insight.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: replaced stator and battery, bike still givin trouble

the regulater is located between tha battery and the gas tank .There are (3) white and(2)red wires .See if they are showing signs of damage from heat more than likley they are because when you "boost" or jump these bikes you burn a very weak diode witch regulates the charging time from the stator i would check ebay for the best price on a new regulater rectifier you may need one.I had the same problem with my 2000 model r6.good luck bro!

SOURCE: harley davidson battery went dead after riding

1.What?

2.What?
You charged the battery off of the battery charger with a trickle charge. The battery wouldn't charge while you're riding, because your alternator took a cr@p.
(Sorry if I seem gruff, but I'm an old biker, and Harleys are all I ride. I'm also a Harley mechanic.
Shhhh! I don't want that to get around! lol!)

3.Battery is at 13.4 volts now? What is the specific gravity of the acid in each cell? Don't have a hydrometer? Do you have a load tester? No? Since you measured the voltage, do you have a multimeter?

Test the voltage with the bike running. It should be around 14.6 volts when charging, less with the battery fully charged.
Don't get the correct reading, then you better look at alternator replacement. (Regulator is built in)

Pull the float bowl caps off the carbs and then spray carb cleaner into the main jet and all other accessible ports on the carbs. Chances are there is a build up of water condensation in the carbs.

My bike having no power under 3k rpm and sometimes while riding under 3k rpm suddenly the engine ceases for a mere fraction of second and again resumes. what causes this?

Hi, Radha my gut tells me it is a fuel issue start with # 13 the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
12. Fuel tank empty.
13. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
14. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

mine recommends using only detergent oil rated API service classification SG-SL. Sounds like an older model and the synthetic may be to thin. Try changing the oil to a SAE 30 to see.

4 wheeler backfire on start

incorrect air fuel mixture or a leak check for damage to the intake boot or airbox

i need to know more about how its running at low mid and high rpm to help you troubleshoot and you need to check for leaks especiely the intake boot if the intake boot is leaking that will need to be fixed before running the bike asumeing that is ok or fixed run the bike listen to it at idle standing is it surgeing with a good fast acceleration off the line with you siting on the quad ? or just realy rough ticking over with little guts off the line ?

midrange rideing how does it feel is there a bwarrr noise as u accelorate hard or does the engine roar up fast

is it reaching a good top end with good pulling power or poor pulling power

are the backfires constant or mainly whyle slowing down from high revs

if all are effected but there are no leaks then it may be float / fuel level that needs ajustment fuel level in ur float bowel effects all stages of rpm low mid and high

A rich problem gets worse as the engine heats up.

A lean problem gets better as the engine heats up.

hope this helps if u dont fix it your self first try and do them little rpm backfire tests for me itl tell me a lot

check for the pinched vacuum line at the carb,, sportys are hard to locate because they are tucked in way behind , it ay have come disconnected, unless there is a load on the motor it will idle fine, add a little load and you get the feeling no fuel is getting through unless you rev it up

Runing lean

has good power and I got a great deal. I just ordered the Clymer manual (3-5 days delivery) so I am posting here to see if you folks have any quick suggestions. I noticed that the engine has a slight backfire/sputtering on deceleration and would take a while to warm up so I was thinking that it was running a little on the lean side. There was also some minor bluing on the exhaust. I took the plugs out last night and they appeared to be fouled. They were coated with carbon (not wet oil). Now I was thinking that it might be running a little rich. I cleaned the plugs and re-gapped at .0035. The engine seemed to warm up quickly but the it was still sputtering a little when downshifting and decelerating. What do you think this is? yeah backfiring while decelerating or downshifting can mean that you are running a little rich. I adjusted the idle screws on my bike to make that problem go away. Makes sense since as you slow down you normally release the throttle to virtually closed anyway... I havent had that problem since. Except now I get backfiring while riding at highway speeds... methinks my carbs are being flooded and the float levels need to be adjusted.,,,
