Question about 2001 Yamaha V-Max

Getting whining sound from shaft drive at high speed. Dealer changed fluid, says no trouble found. How do I verify sufficient gear lube is present?

SOURCE: whining from transmission or shaft drive , yamaha xvs650 2004 mod

Check the gear oil level in the shaft drive and make sure it is the right level, and that you are using the proper type of oil (check your service manual).

However, I understand it's normal for these bikes to exhibit some gear noise at low speed due to the design of the transmission (straight-cut gears).

Unfortunately, you can get noise from the transmission, clutch basket, drive shaft, pinion gears or rear wheel on the Royal Star. No way to tell which you have so:

Barring a failure of the clutch basket, a change to a multi-grade synthetic oil THAT DOES NOT HAVE AN ENERGY-CONSERVING SEAL ON THE BOTTLE will quiet gear and clutch noise. Energy-conserving oils tend to make a wet clutch slip. Try Shell Rotella-T (T6) synthetic, available at Walmart for about $19.00 a gallon, I've got 111,000 on a Tour Deluxe with it, and it just keeps going...

The drive shaft on the Royal Star can also make noise if both ends are not properly lubricated; tourers have found that Honda Moly 60 paste on both ends at about 15,000 mile intervals will eliminate that aggravation.

Hypoid gears in the final drive can also be noisy. Short of having the drive disassembled and replacement shims installed, changing to a good synthetic 75W-140 lubricant will quiet or eliminate the whine.

Splines and pins in the final drive and rear wheel assembly can also cause noise. Remove the rear wheel, put a thin layer of Honda Moly 60 paste on the pins, dampers and in the drive spline, ditto with the mating spline on the final drive. I relubricate all of these every time I change rear tires, probably more often than necessary, but it's convenient to do when the wheel is off.

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one

Hello, Also check the rear differential level as a Pinion gear can whine too! If you have a limited slip differential, there is an additive to use for the differential plates. You need to check your trans oil, but if it is at the top, makes noise, it is probably a mechanical problem.

I want to say a product called Lube Guard has a line of oils which help reduce noise. There are different formulas for steering, trans, differential and so forth.

I see you have a 2009 car. A Warranty can vary in age and mileage. Check with your Dealer about what you have for your car. It may all be a covered repair.

Verify that your trans fluid is at the correct level. When if at all was the trans last serviced?

If fluid is low, try bringing it up to proper level with Valvoline ATF+4 fluid. You need to used either fluid from a dealer, or the valvoline brand which is approved by Dodge.

1994 ranger in 3rd and 5th gears, it has a loud whine to it.


Mine has a high pitched whistle at high rpms and I can't figure it out. But mines def not the tranny. I'm thinking it's a vacuum line somewhere. It's a 97 2.3l manual. The colder it is the louder...

Unfortunately, you can get noise from the transmission, clutch basket, drive shaft, pinion gears or rear wheel on the Royal Star. No way to tell which you have so:

Broken clutch springs and bent or warped clutch and friction plates can also be noisy, but that is typically experienced across the whole speed range; fixing a problem like that would involve replacement of the clutch assembly. The transmission gears are straight-cut for strength, and tend to be noisier than bevel-cut gears, still, if the noise remains annoying after an oil change, have the dealer or, better yet, a veteran Royal Star rider, evaluate the noise to see if it is excessive.

Gear whine at speed 55-75


have the center bearing in the drive shaft checked, cold weather can even sound like a faint siren like a cop is pullin ya over, ....
front wheel bearings are somewhat common also

Rear end is whining


When manufactured (new) the rear end gears are preloaded (tensioned) and the gears are aligned. The 80/90 weight gear lube is intended to help maintain that set of adjustments for 50 - 100 thousand miles (US cars) or 150-200 thousand miles (Japanese, German, Korean cars). Beyond the design limits, gear lube needs to be flushed out and new added. If whining continues, the gears have warn beyond design limits... and will fail. Exactly when failure will occur depends on the strain placed on the gears (racing, hard acceleration, towing, carrying heavy loads).

Summary: Whining is preload and alignment ware. Good lube and gentle driving will extend the life of the differential - but no one can predict for how long.

Transmission makes a whine at speeds in excess of 20mph in all gears 1-5 and lower speeds 0-20 it clicks whether the clutch is in or not


I assume its a manual transmission, sounds like the gears are whineing, check the fluid level, most manual are splash lubricated so low oil means not lubrication, also could be syncronizers, bearings, worn gears, out put/ in put shaft
