The oil viscosity is usually 15W-40 or 20W-50, depending on your climate. The hotter the weather, the heavier the oil. The amount it takes is on the port where you pour the oil in. It will be in CC's. There are 946CC's in one quart. Always use only motorcycle oil.

matt

What sort of oil does my harley rocker c take

You do not mention engine or primary or transmission. HD SYN3 can be used in any or all. I believe for the engine the best is Harley-Davidson 360 (20/50) in most operating temperatures I am operating in. If you know how HD tested, developed and otherwise came up with this oil it is quite impressive. You could use synthetic (SYN3) but I don't I just use the regular HD 360 motorcycle oil. You do need motorcycle oil because it has necessary, very beneficial additives that are not in automotive oils. Unless you are running in very hot outside temperatures I do not see the benefit to SYN3 but if one has money to throw around it is very good oil also. Thing is to change it always before it gets a chance to break down and or turn dirty. HD recommends changing the oil and filter at 5000 miles or 8000 km intervals and I would recommend that or sooner in very hot or dusty conditions. Using synthetic oil does not extend these mileages between changes. If you have been using one type of oil for an extended time it is usually not recommended to change to a different type i.e. HD 360 to SYN3 or vice versa. If you do not know what was used before pick a type now and stick with it. SYN3 is all 20W50. (The W stands for winter.) The oil has a viscosity of 20 cold and will not thin out more than a 50 weight would when it is hot.

Harley recommends HD 360 engine oil as follows:

H.D. Multi-Grade SAE 10W40 as excellent for cold weather starts below 50 degrees F and for use with lowest ambient temperature below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C).
H.D. Multi-Grade SAE 20W50 as good for cold weather starts below 50 degrees F and for use with lowest ambient temperature above 40 degrees F (4 degrees C).

H.D. Multi-Grade SAE 50 as poor for cold weather starts below 50 degrees F and for use with lowest ambient temperature above 60degrees F (16 degrees C).

H.D. Multi-Grade SAE 60 as poor for cold weather starts below 50 degrees F and for use with lowest ambient temperature above 80 degrees F (27 degrees C).

For transmission and/or primary use SYN3 or FORMULA+ TRANSMISSION AND PRIMARY CHAINCASE LUBRICANT (Part No. 99851-05, US quart size).

I won't deal with fork oil at all.

Whatever you do, NEVER use anything but DOT 4 Brake Fluid.in a DOT 4 system. Also be careful with it as it will eat away any and all painted surfaces and even the black powder coated brake fluid reservoir coatings.
If DOT 5 goes into a DOT4 system or DOT 4 goes into a DOT5 system all rubber brake system components will be destroyed.

1972 shovelhead oil routing

Bottom of oil tank to right/outside feed on pump. Inside is return line to top of tank where filter cap is. If you ran a cooler than run this line to the cooler and back to the tank. Above the pump is the large vent line. It goes to a tee fitting and than to the top of the tank and to the back/bottom of the primary. The small line goes to the back /center of the primary. It\'s the chain oiler.

What oil do i use for a 99 1200xl sportster

You can use one or the other. If you use regular oil, Harley 20w50 goes in the oil tank and Formula + goes in the primary. If you use synthetic (Harley Syn 3) the same oil goes in both oil tank and primary.

2006 dyna street bob. mistakenly drained the primary like others. can i use regular oil in a pinch

Your bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 engine oil in the engine, primary, and transmission. You can use most any oil you wish in the primary on a temporary basis but I wouldn't go any higher viscosity than straight 30 weight. The 20W50 oil is the same viscosity as a 20 weight oil when it's cold. When hot, it's the same as a hot 50 weight oil. The primary really doesn't need a specific type of oil. The "old timers" would put automatic transmission fluid in the primaries of their bikes. All it basically needs is something to lube the primary chain and sprockets. With the bike standing straight up, fill the primary until the oil is just up to the bottom of the outer clutch shell. Do not overfill or you'll have difficult finding neutral with the engine running and the clutch will drag.

Good Luck

Need to know engine oil type and transmission oil type and capacities for 2004 fxdwgi

Your bike came new from the factory with Harley-Davidson Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the engine, transmission, and primary. You can change brands of any oil you wish but go online and see what the manufacturer recommends. Some other manufacturers of lubricants are Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, Golden Spectro, and RevTech. Just follow their recommendations. The engine holds approx. 3 quarts, the primary holds approx. a quart, and the transmission holds 20-24 ounces. Always check the level with the dipstick once you change the oil. The dipsticks have two marks on them. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill.

Good Luck

Gear Box oil change How do i do it??

Trans fluid and primary fluid are the same oil , The drain plug is under the laft side primary cover. 1 qt of oil goes in the inspection cover on the top side of the primary cover. The oil drain is a hose under the left side by the frame rail. Look for a oil line with a plug. fill with approx 3 qts through the oil tank. Make sure you get the bike up to operating temp before dropping the fluid.
