SOURCE: honda cbr 400 rr starting problem

i could not find a schematic of a 96 cbr400rr, so guessing this bike is not from the USA. however, there should be a master fuse near the battery on the positive side mounted to the battery box somewhere. i would check this fuse first to see if its burned out.

also, is battery fully charged? might have to top charge the battery to get good juice if its old (>3 years) and been sitting for a bit.

good luck.

SOURCE: 2005 CRF450R Hard to start and wont idle

Hi
I would suggest that you have the valve clearances checked.

Also, check that the carb is clean. Pay particular attention to the PILOT JET as this opperates the idle circuit.

SOURCE: 1986 Honda Shadow vt1100 does not start.

Try to jump start the bike, 2nd gear down hill key on and let the clutch out... If it starts you have a starter problem, could be the brushes.. good luck...

SOURCE: I have a 2000 Honda Shadow 750 ACE. While riding

Take the starter button off and put a 12 volt tester on one of the 4 leads that are wired into the button. Test each- If you find a hot line, take a small piece of wire and jump the current over to the other parrallel button. I worked on my bike for two weeks before I discovered this problem. Another problem was that the headlight would not come on. The starter would not crank at all. I took a screw driver and raised the brass leads on the switch so they would make contact and put the switch back together, and it worked. Good luck.

I have an 05 with the same problem. Sounds like your STVA went out. Do you still have your butterflies wired open? I know how to repair the stva fixed mine, and saved hundreds....if your still on this post email me so we can get our bikes fixed. also check your kick stand sensor! This can malfunction and cause same stalling problems.

Can a rm 125 go on the sand

Yes - you can run this bike on the sand but a few words of warning: Sand is extremely hard on any bike. I am going to assume you are talking about deep sand - like beach sand. All sand is not the same - some is not bad to ride in (like dunes) but sand like beach sand can be very deep and very, very hard to ride in.

Sand robs so much power from any bike that it is extremely hard on the engine and drive train. For those that race in the sand, their motors are typically rebuilt before each event and are pretty much shot afterwards. Also - your tires, brakes, chain and sprockets need to be in good condition. Sand is very hard on all of these components and has a way of getting into every bearing and seal on the bike.

I would not recommend riding in the sand to anyone that can not maintain their own equipment. If you do ride in the sand without maintaining the bike it can be pretty badly damaged pretty quickly - the sand can get into all of the suspension and wheel bearings, brakes, chain, etc. and slowly destroy them. It also wears components that usually don't get worn - like the frame, swingarm and even the engine cases. Careful maintenance, cleaning and inspection is critical to keeping these bikes running and in good shape.

If you choose do do this, make sure your radiator is clean and full of good coolant, your gearbox is full of good quality oil, your air filter is clean, your chain is snug (oiled too - don't use heavy chain lube) and your tires are in good shape and filled with at least 12 PSI (hard tires for soft ground, soft tires for hard ground).

I hope this helped.

Take the bike out for a 40 mile ride, new battery, rides great, all of a sudden it runs terrible, it dies out and blows fuses.

possible, rectifier problem , or stator problem.

put a multimeter on the battery, should read around 12v engine not running, with engine running should show 13v or more.

Stalls after 5 min of riding, but a few hours later it runs fine

the battery is failin or not charging rite-on a coil ignition u always need 12 V cause the bike doesnt feed off alternator like a car--test it -may still be good but charge it before cruzing

1990 virago 535 starts and runs great for about 3 or 4 miles

Pull the float bowl caps off the carbs and then spray carb cleaner into the main jet and all other accessible ports on the carbs. Chances are there is a build up of water condensation in the carbs.

It all seems to be leading to fuel starvation. Have you checked the tank breather is not blocked which can be a small hole in the petrol cap or a tube from under the tank. It could also be a blocked fuel filter. There should be two. One inside the fuel tank under the petcock, another before the fuel pump. Here is the workshop manual where you can find all info you will ever need for this bike.
