Removing the baffles will lean out the mixture, so either rejetting the carb, or reprogramming the ECM or a "piggy-back" unit installed will be needed.

Actually, open "straight" pipes are the worse for performance, as some back pressure is needed.

Also, to help performance with a "free flowing" exhaust, a more "free flowing" air cleaner would be needed.

SOURCE: Question about Vance and Hines quiet baffles

about 3-5db but you must remember db is not a linear scale but logirythmic. basicallyy the baffles will remove the harsh rasp off the pipe and make them deep in sound, when cold they will be as loud as normal but once they have some heat in them they quieten down

Depending on the pipes you purchased, they will be stamped as to whether or not they meet noise requirements. Many if not most aftermarket pipes do not. Sorry.

What you're hearing is the rocker arm opening the valves. This is normal operating noise.

Your Harley is an older design pushrod operated engine. Unlike most other motorcycles engines, Harley does not use overhead cams in any of their bikes other than the V-Rod. Additionally, there is no sound deadening material inside the rocker box covers. Although the engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets, there is a bit of running clearance in the rocker arms and their shafts they run on.

In short, this is not unusual and your Harley will run for many miles. If you can hear that clicking, it sounds like you need to take the baffles out of that V&H pipe.

To see a diagram of your engine, go to BikeBandit.com. , click on OEM and choose your bike or any Big Twin of that year.

Good Luck

Running slow

As the piston moves down towards the sump, air is vented through a baffle arrangement called the breather.Sometimes a tube connects the breather to the carburettor so that droplets of oil are fumes are sucked back into the engine to be burnt. If you turn a mower on its side and the breather is on the lower side, oil can run out of the breather and possibly into the carburettor.
The carburettor is probably flooded and contaminated with oil. This should eventually dissipate as gas dilutes the oil, but try removing the filter and checkout whether a lot of oil has accumulated. Another scenario is that the air filter has become saturated with oil. If the filter is a foam type, the excess oil can be squeezed out. However if a paper filter is fitted, the likelihood is that it will have been destroyed and need to be replaced.

Back fire with vance hines pipes

Sounds like it is running lean. The ECM must be remapped for a performance breather and/or free flowing pipes. I would use H-D Super Tuner or have a dealer do a digital download to remap the ECM properly for the changes you have obviously made. You may do great harm to your engine if you run it without the mapping change as the VE will be changed and the ECM doe not know what is physically going on with VE if it is not mapped into the ECM

Check engine light is on - 3 codes 17748,17573,17755. Fuel mileage is down significantly, as is engine power

17748 camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor incorrect correlation [bank 1]. Valve timing is most probably incorrectly set. 17573 Rich mixture. Can be caused by high fuel pressure. -Faulty Lambda Probes. - Blockage in exhaust system[ loose baffles] - Blockage in inlet[clogged air filter] Petrol tank breather system [faulty canister purge valve]. 17755 same as 17748 but bank two. Check valve timing, Fuel pressure and for loose baffles in exhaust system.

There is a puddle of oil behind the throttle plate in my 97 land rover discovery.why? there is a breather hose that goes from the valve cover to the mantafold plenum is there supposed to be a pcv valve or...

My 96 Discovery has a plastic baffles inside the valve cover port that connects to the hose. If it got brittle and cracked, then oil could leak by. Its cheap and easy to replace, along with the hose. There is a second hose on the other side to replace as well. Land Rover was proud to pass emissions standards without using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The whole system is sealed, so all the air entering the engine is being metered by the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, unless your breather hoses crack and leak. Unfortunately, oil in your location might also indicate other engine trouble, such as worn piston rings (causing pressure in the crankcase). I would try replacing the plastic baffle piece first.
