Question about Harley Davidson Motorcycles
Removing the baffles will lean out the mixture, so either rejetting the carb, or reprogramming the ECM or a "piggy-back" unit installed will be needed.
Actually, open "straight" pipes are the worse for performance, as some back pressure is needed.
Also, to help performance with a "free flowing" exhaust, a more "free flowing" air cleaner would be needed.

about 3-5db but you must remember db is not a linear scale but logirythmic. basicallyy the baffles will remove the harsh rasp off the pipe and make them deep in sound, when cold they will be as loud as normal but once they have some heat in them they quieten down

Depending on the pipes you purchased, they will be stamped as to whether or not they meet noise requirements. Many if not most aftermarket pipes do not. Sorry.

What you're hearing is the rocker arm opening the valves. This is normal operating noise.
Your Harley is an older design pushrod operated engine. Unlike most other motorcycles engines, Harley does not use overhead cams in any of their bikes other than the V-Rod. Additionally, there is no sound deadening material inside the rocker box covers. Although the engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets, there is a bit of running clearance in the rocker arms and their shafts they run on.
In short, this is not unusual and your Harley will run for many miles. If you can hear that clicking, it sounds like you need to take the baffles out of that V&H pipe.
To see a diagram of your engine, go to BikeBandit.com. , click on OEM and choose your bike or any Big Twin of that year.
