Hi, Anonymous popping or backfiring on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean. Why is my bike backfiring?


a back fire on a bike is usually the cause of timing being out or damaged carburettor ( too much petrol going through ) in the case of the carb you can adust the air screw to see if that helps ( small screw in the side of the carb ) screw it right in and then bring it out 1 and a half turns ,this will get you very close to the right mixture. in the case of timing being out you will need to take the fly wheel off and adjust the stator plate ( turn it to the timing marks ) as a rule its usually . back fire through the exhaust is timing,back fire through the carb is fuel mixture. if you rev it when it starts and it pops through the exhaust the problem is within the fly wheel . if it pops through the carb the problem is with mixture.

back firing through the carby is an indication of valve timing, bad valves, ignition timing or crossed HT leads. Check the firing order

Valves have to be seated by lapping. If you skipped this then the valve seat is not correct.

Hi Anonymous, remove air cleaner backing plate. Spray some starter fluid or Brake Kleen at the intake maifold where it connects to the heads and carb. If RPM's go up you have an intake leak, replace the appropriate seals. Good luck

Miss fire on left cylinder


Plugged carb passages, if CV carb, hole in diaphragm, stuck valve, bad plug. Do you have spark on both cylinders? Use a spark plug in each plug cap and make sure they are grounded or you can damage the black box! Look for cracks on the coils.

1983 CJ-7 Had someone put water in gas tank? Blew out lines, rebuilt carb and cleaned out, cleaned tank, gas dryer and new fuel, new fuel filter (clear), new fuel pump,replaced rotor cap, plug wires,...


You put something back the wrong way.....any amount of water in the tank, carb or whatever WILL NOT cause the engine not to fire.....check any wiring/rewiring you did for accuracy

Backfiring out of the exhaust is usually an ignition problem. Unburned fuel is getting into the exhaust system because it's not being ignited in the cylinder. When the engine fires on that cylinder again, it ignites the raw fuel in the exhaust causing the pop that people call a backfire. I'd investigate the ignition system. Connect a timing light to each of the spark plug wires if it has a single fire ignition or either of them if the ignition system is the stock dual fire. Start the engine and watch the timing light to tell if the engine is missing as the light will miss a flash.

Back fires thru carb when excellerating but lopes when u take off manual trans


do you hear a pop pop poping under heavy acceleration or just one big back fireing when first accelerating? it could be an intake valve pop pop poping,and electrical,on the big bafireing under lite to med load. A cracked,or worn cap and rotor,weak coil wire,dirty carbruator,faulty accelerator pump in carb bad vacumn advance !slow ignition timing. BAD points and condenser if equiped on older model with carb.

1978 Shovelhead has a miss or backfires through the carb at slower speeds. Runs fine over 50 mph. Changed intake O ring gaskets, still pops and misses at slower speeds.


Make sure your hotwire to the coil is making a good connection. Check air intake manifold for air leak - o-rings can be tricky to get installed correctly. Finally, change carburator jet to richer mixture. Popping backk through the carb means lean fuel mixture.
