1989 Z-71 will not engage took linkage off manually shifted it . It held but kicked out before i got outa the drive

This may seem a bit odd, but here is what happened to me.

While changing a clutch plate, a bit of fluid leaked out. When everything was put back in and I tried to shift, it refused.
Removed linkage, shifted great. Replaced linkage, it would not shift.
In desperation, I added what seemed like, a miniscule amount of fluid to tranny. Everything now worked perfectly.

Hmmmmm...........go figure.

How to replace the shift linkage in the pontiac montana van

On that van, like many other GM front-wheel-drive vehicles, the shift cable goes through a bracket on the transmission to the linkage( the little metal arm). Where the cable connects to the linkage, there is a ball stud. It takes quite a bit of force to disconnect the cable from that. If it became disconnected at that ball without any other outside influence, the shift cable may need to be replaced. You can try pushing the plastic end of the shift cable back on to that ball stud ,it should click into place.
If the ball stud became disconnected from the linkage(little metal arm), the linkage would need to be replaced.
There should be a locknut holding the linkage to the transmission stud right above the range selector switch. If it came loose of there, you may need a new linkage, and to replace that nut

Shifter linkage failure on 2001 Chevrolet Venture

check the linkage on the transmission, i have heard of the shift cables breaking if there is a lot of weight against the parking pin such as parking on a hill without first applying the emergency brake before placing it in park.

91 Dodge Spirit stuck in low gear, won't shift out.

Sounds like you need a new shift cable. Remove the shift cable from the linkage on the transmission. If the transmission linkage moves freely back into the park position and the shift lever inside the car still will not move back into park than the cable is bad. If the transmission shift linkage will not move back into park with the cable removed than the transmission will need to be pulled apart to service the shift rod.

My 1992 mercury topaz shift hard when coming to a stop. recently had transmission replaced. maybe missing transmission shift cable. is there such a part

unit has shift linkage between throttle and transmission linkage, it has plastic bushings that hold it in place, they will get brittle with time and break, allowing linkage to come off or be out of adjustment. Have whoever rebuilt it have a look at them and replace them. There plastic, cost should be a few dollars.

Shifter very loose

Hi and welcome to fixya,

You'll need to replace the shift linkages to make shifting tighter on the notch. Shift linkages are like ball joints that permit forward and backward movements on the rods connected to the transmission box. If these joints come loose, you'll get a "shaky" shift response and often times a very long throw during shifting.

Replace the joints with the same type, align it and you'll be surprised how your shifter is all back to factory setting again.

hope this helps

Hello
Try this. Disconnect the transmission linkage under the hood at the
colum. Now try moving the shift lever,if it functions normaly, check the
linkage from the colum to the transmission to see if it is bent or bound up. If you still can't shift with the linkage disconnected, the problem is
inside the colum. The easiest fix is to get a used colum.
If you have a cable. Disconnect it at the transmission first. if it still won't
shift, disconnect the cable at the colum. If it shifts, replace the cable.
If not. You're back to replacing the colum. In either case, block the wheels, and make sure the linkage connection at the transmission moves freely. Hope this helps. Good luck.

1982 rabbit shift linkage

There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.

Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.

If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.

There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking collar or clamp.

The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.

Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten the clamp.

You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.

This is much easier if you have an assistant.
