sounds like the chain is way to tight readjust clutch and tensioner and check for noise. you may even wanna run a charge test to see if you have stator problems or a loose compensator nut

not running for a year! You have a varnish buildup in the low end circuit of the carb. You will need to remove the carb and do a full teardown of the carb to properly rectify this problem. SOMETIMES we are able to free up the passages by putting SEA FOAM cleaner in the tank , fill her up with fresh fuel and ride through the tank and it will clear up. SEA FOAM can be purchased at an auto parts store and is sometimes very effective. 1/4 cup to full tank fuel.

Is the clutch cable adjusted correctly, you may need to adjust the cable so that the clutch is released more fully, there will be an adjuster on either end of the clutch cable - adjust it so that the cable is tighter - but there should be a little bit of play left in the clutch - if this does not cure the problem you could have some gearbox damage,
The bike is still under warranty so take it to a harley dealers and have them look at it.

Need instructions on replacing the whole clutch


Remove all tension from the cable. Drain the fluid and remove the primary outer cover. Remove the primary chain adjuster. Remove clutch adjustment plate cir-clip and plate assembly . Lock compensatory and clutch sprockets. Loosen and remove compensator and clutch hub assembly nuts and assemblies. Remember that the clutch nut is a left hand thread.

Torque for clutch and stator nuts


Clutch hub nut 70-80 ft-lbs 94.9-108.5 Nm
Left hand threads, apply several drops of LOCTITE
THREADLOCKER 262 (red) to last few threads.

Compensating sprocket nut 150-165 ft-lbs 203.4-223.7 Nm
Apply several drops of LOCTITE THREADLOCKER
262 (red) to last few threads.

Clean ALL old loctite from all threads on both nuts and shafts.

How much latteral play is allowed on the cutch shell on a 98 dyna


I am not sure what you are calling "lateral play" but the clutch should not have any play. If the clutch hub has lateral play the hub bearing may be gone and/or the input shaft bearing may be gone. Is the clutch operating abnormally or is there transmission noise etc. WHAT is the problem that needs to be fixed???

Clutch hub nut, left-hand thread, couple drops 262 loctite (red) to last few threads, 70 - 80 ft-lbs.

Crankshaft nut, right-hand thread, couple drops 262 loctite (red) to last few threads, 150 - 165 ft-lbs.

How to changr drive belt


To change the final drive belt on a Wide Glide is a big job but not quite as big as on some other models.

You will have to pull the entire primary drive assembly, including the clutch and the inner primary cover from the engine and transmission. You'll have to remove the exhaust system, the starter, the rear wheel, and the left side rear shock. On a Wide Glide, you do not have to remove the swing arm.

There are some "special tools" necessary to do the job as well. You'll need a torque wrench capable of applying 150-165 pounds of torque to the engine sprocket shaft nut and 60-80 pounds LEFT-HANDED torque to the mainshaft nut in the clutch assembly. Not all torque wrenches do left-handed torque. You'll also need a "locking bar" to lock up the primary drive while you apply these torques to prevent the engine from turning. A good solid way to get the bike off the ground is necessary as well.

It's an all-day job for an experienced mechanic with the proper tools to do the job with.
