Hi Paul, seat removal can range from the simple and obvious to the complex and baffling for the novice new Harley Davidson owner. Seems like the more expensive the bike is the harder it is to remove the seat. So let's start with the most expensive. 99% of all Harley seats have a male tounge in the front that slides into a female reciever that is either bolted or welded to the frame just behind the fuel tank. For this reason when ever you are removing a seat you must always slide it backwards 3-5 inches. Next they may may have a bolt on each side usually under a flap on the seat. Then there is the seat strap that is secured on both sides, only one side needs to be removed. A single phillips head bolt can secure it to the rear fender or it may have a bracket with two studs secured by nuts or knobs to fasten the rear portion of the seat. On newer model short seats there may be a "T" stud that locks in the rear portion of the seat just a few inches in front of the rear seat bolt, you have to push forward and lift up after you remove the bolt. If you have a pillion pad or passenger seat that snugs up against the front seat there can be a bolt securing the two to the rear fender, you have to get your hand in between the two seats and force seperation of seat material to see and gain acess to the bolt. Finally there is the rear seat bolt in the back that is the caboose of seat fasteners, usually a large chrome bracket, that screws into the rear fender. Care must be exercised in covering this shinny bauble with your hand during the sliding back procedure so as to NOT scratch the tour pak. So when all the hidden and mysterious fasteners have been removed, it's lift up in the rear, slide backwards a few inches and bingo you have mastered the impossible. Good luck.

SOURCE: Have Harley 2001 Sportster 883 with custom seat.

2001 sportster doesn't need the seat taken off to get to the battery (unless you have a large seat). On the right side of the battery (toward the rear tire) there is a bolt which goes through a hole in the frame. take the nut off this bolt and you'll see the bolt is attached to a long squareish metal bracket. Take that metal piece off and your battery will pull out. It's heavy for how small it is so make sure you pick UP and pull out, don't just pull it out, the lip of the frame will hold it in.

Hi Anonymous, 1998 and later Sportster models circuit breaker and fuses were located in an electrical bracket behind the starter relay and data link that was mounted behind the left side panel. 1997 and earlier circuit breakers only no fuses were located under the seat. Good luck.

How to drain engine crankcase oil 2004 1200 sportster

Run the bike to get it to normal operating temperature. Put an thin oil pan on the ground under the center of the engine. Look for the little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the bike with a plastic plug in it and held in the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp and save to reuse if it is the screw type. Then pull the plug out and open up the oil fill cap on right side by the seat.

Take the seat off and go in from the top of the battery with a 10 mm wrench. That ought to get it unless they changed something. I can't say that I've worked on that particular model but most Sportsters are like this.

I need to change the battery in my 2004 Harley XL1200C

I usually get to the negative ground bolt from the right side of the bike. You need a long crosspoint screwdriver. Removing the seat does help a bit as you can see it better. Good Luck, Steve
