Question about 1980 Suzuki Gs 550 L

1 Answer

Alternator Wires I bought my 1980 suzuki for a winter project. I totally rebuilt the bike and now im rebuilding the wiring harness, I have everything all worked out except the 3 wires that run our from the Alternator. I have 3 grey wires that I have no clue on on the order to hook up. The manual shows I should have white with blue tracer, white with green tracer and white with red tracer. Or on TSCC models they all should be yellow.. Being that mine are all grey, does anything think that I have and aftermarket alternator for a TSCC model. if thats the case can I hook these wires up in any order???

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Being of the the same color indicates that they could be connected in any order to the rectifier/regulator. Additionally, being a 3 phase AC system, the diodes inside the rectifier/regulator would process the output of the alternator and 'sum' (no order required) them up to produce the DC voltage.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

One way to verify is to use a continuity tester. The ohmage should be equal no matter which gray is paired to any other of the grays.

Im rebuilding a kawasaki 125cc 2 stroke dirt bike and need to know what the yellow and white wires coming from the motor connect to

If it's coming from the lower case of the engine, most likely they're the alternator wires, and they need to connect to the voltage regulator.

My 04 suzuki katana 750 has a battery draining problem

You definitely hooked something up wrong. Get a wiring diagram for the exact bike you have and try again. Oh, the regulator is probably fried. Sorry.

Im looking to buy a 1980 suzuki cavalcade bike runs but it sat for 4 months the salesman says he thinks it doesnt get up to speed as quick it should is it the carbs

that is a partial clean for the carb. the best way is to get a carb rebuild kit and "deep clean" and replace all the gaskets. when doing this, you may find other problems such as broken parts inside the carb.

I have a 1980 Suzuki GS 550 L as my winter project. First thing I did was clean tank out and kreem it with tank liner. Then rebuild the carburetors top and bottom end of the carbs. I soaked the jets in...

Please take out your spark plugs and check their electrode condition. If they are black then you have a very rich mixture. That could be a faulty ignition spark (weak) or clogged airway in the air filter housing. Also check the carb's needles if they are adjustable in height, pute them in the middle scale. I believe when you were cleaning the carbs, you took out the pilot screw and the idle jet and cleaned that circuit thoroughly.
If they are white then your mixture is lean (probably your intake system sucks extra air from the intake collars where you plug the carbs on to the cylinder head or from the collars that connects the carbs to the air filter housing)

1979 suzuki gs 550l no fire at the plugs but coils have power

Most bikes before 1980 have points (i'm sorry but I don't know for sure with yours, ) however if you know, then ,,, check the points and everything connected to them, if your sure that the coil has power, then its going to be a problem in the car , ie rotor , points, or the cap itself
