Question about 2004 Harley Davidson FLSTC - FLSTCI Heritage Softail Classic

1 Answer

My 2004 Heritage Softail Classic has devoloped a 'whirring' noise from the engine area. most noticeable at idle and low speeds. I am assuming it is from the counterbalance system in the 88B motor. Any advice on servicing this problem? Bike has low mileage (29,000 Klms) and has not been abused, Always run synthetic oil.

I haven't had any problems with the balancing system. If the noise is coming from the left side, check the primary chain adjustment/adjuster. If it's coming from the right side, check the cam shoes. The shoes went bad in my '04 Fatboy and whined like it had gear drive cams. Good luck!

Thanks for the help! I adjusted the primary as you said and then tightened the front exhaust manifold. Noise is now gone!

SOURCE: oil drain plug

Hi
It is located on the right side just under the oil tank ; if you follow the rudder hose that exits the rear right side of your oil tank it leads to the bottom of the frame under this is the oil plug. This hose has a plug clamped to the end of it or stuck into a prug that is welded to the frame.
After this unclamp and pull the plug to make sure that you have the dipstick out before pulling it loose.

Please do rate the solution as "FixYa" if found useful and revert for further assistance.
Thanks Rylee

SOURCE: how to change oil for2007 heritage softail classic

The oil drain us usually a hose with a plug in it that is held by a clip on the frame. It us usually on the right hand side of the bike just behind and underneath the transmission side cover. Loosen the clamp and pull the plug out. The oil will run out of the tank. Replace plug and add new oil to the tank.

Sounds like valve clatter, a common issue. We chased the same noise, with HD installing new push rods, adjustable rods and then they said it is a Harley. Not a real answer. This noise ruines the ride as it grabs your mind and focuses you on the noise. We tried different rod extensions within the lifter adjustment range, same deal. We chased for about 1 1/2 years, trying to not void warranty.

The only long term solution was to go to aftermarket (velvet touch) lifters and lifter blocks. Now we NEVER hear the issue.

Where is the oil drain on the 2003 Heritage Softail Classic?

on the right side of the bike where the swing arm and frame meet look for a 5/8" head drain plug pointing straight down that is your drain for the engine oil.
