Question about 1992 Suzuki GSX 600 F (Katana)

Brake light problems

I have a 1994 Suzuki Katana GSX600 F the brake light does not work. When I apply either the handle or foot pedal the light fails to come on. Tested the fuses the result was nothing. Before that I replaced the bulb also. Would you might have a schemetics of the wiring of that particular problem? Would have a manual for this bike? Is it possible to e-mail me some information with drawings of that electrical wiring?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem indicates a loose or no ground connection of the brake light socket (most likely) or missing IGN + 12 (least likely). If the turn signals and/or the fuel gauge works, then the latter is unlikely as they share the same IGN+12 supply line. These might interest you:

  • a wiring diagram for the 89-95 GSX600F is available here;
  • a service manual for a GSX600F is here. Pls verify year compatibility.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Brake lights do not come on

You may have a defective brake switch. The switch is located behind the brake foot pedal. When you apply pressure to the brake foot pedal, the switch should compress.

When i start my wind star in park and apply brake it wont shift out of park

Hi, first check your brake lights. If they are not working, the likely problem is the brake light switch above the brake pedal.
The shifter has a solenoid that locks the shifter until you put your foot on the brake. If the brake switch fails or the fuse burns out, the brake will not signal the shift solenoid to unlock the shifter. If the brake lights are working, the problem may be the shift solenoid itself. The solenoid is at the base of the shifter.
Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

your brake light switch above the pedal has failed or is stuck in. Look up at it to see if it is releasing the button when the brake is pressed. If yes, replace the switch. It only costs about $20, but may be a pain to get in and out. The switch looks like this:

You need to adjust the brake light switch (located in the pedal box (drivers foot well) ) The switch should only function after a reasonable amount of pedal travel and a slight adjustment will correct this . Good luck
