Shifting from 4 wheel dr to 2 wheel drive, i get a clunking sound and hesitation in forward travel

Check the driveshaft joints , jack it up and rotate and feel them as it sounds as one of them has stated to break ! ( wobbly joint )

Loose rattle in 4 wheel drive


front driveshaft joints worn, front ring/pinion gears or bearings worn, front locking mechinism faulty or binding. If you put the car in 4x4 and the car fails to move, as in neutral type feeling, then all your torque is going to the front, something is not locked in and its just spinning. Transfer case faulty....

Clunking noise in rear end when reversing then going forward


The rear suspension has no drive parts as your car is a FWD, front wheel drive. There are parts on the wheel axles which have bearings and also Brakes.
If you have rear disc brakes, the inner part of the rotor has a drum for Emergency brakes and these linings often peel off their brake shoe. The loose lining can get ground up in the turning rotor hub. The Emergency brakes are pinned to the brake backing plate and can clunk when the shoes shift. If you have rear drum brakes the shoes may be out of adjustment or worn out leaving room to rock as vehicle direction changes.
Bearings, excess play can cause noise. Suspension brackets, bushings within the mounts for these components can wear out. When parts are moving in 1 direction a "set" is grooved into the rubber parts. Changing direction of travel will unseat the part and make noise.
Traveling sound. You may be hearing a sound you suspect is in the rear of the car, but is actually a cradle mount around the Firewall. Sound travels through metal.
You need to get the rear wheels off the ground and check for play in all the components. For the cradle mounts, have someone ride the brake pedal and shift the transmission forward and backward to see if noise is generated or excess play is seen.

Will not go into 4 wheel low


Make sure you have it in (N) before shifting it. Did it work before?

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban. I have automatic four wheel drive but when I shift into four wheel high it makes clunking sound. I have not tried four wheel low. I wondered why I can still use auto four wheel...


the auto 4 wheel does the same as part time in jeeps, it engages only when the vehicle loses traction. when auto 4 wheel is on the truck isn't fully in 4 wheel drive. my 02 sierra makes the clunk noise too but it does engage. try checking your fluids, i know its way pass the time for me to change mine out.

Clunking front hubs


usually the noise in the front end is the u-joints or cv joints out towards the tires.

Noise in front diff


Three probable issues;
1-The transfer case is low or out of fluid.
2-The drive shaft may be out of alignment due to worn front or back U joints (thus the clunk on shift)
3-the shift lever is out of alignment with the shift mechanism on the transmission housing.
