Question about 2002 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

2002 VStar1100 balks under load

I just had the starter clutch replaced on my V star 1100. After, I cleaned the carburetors, adjusted the valves, changed the fuel filter. Plugs and air filter are fine. Gas is fresh. The bike starts easily and idles perfectly, even revs great at stand still. Yet when I try to ride it, it will balk once under load. Impossible to make it past 2nd gear.
I have ran out of ideas. Anybody know what the issue could be?

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes it is hard to tell at low speeds if the fuel mix is too lean or if it is too rich. Simple to work at though. Let's say the mix is too lean. Remove the slide from the throat of the carb then move the clip on the jet needle down one notch. This richens the low end mix. Try it out. If it is better then try another notch. Choose which is best.

Now lets say the original mix is too rich. Remove the slide from the throat of the carb then move the clip on the jet needle up one notch from the original clip position. This leans the low end mix. Try it out. If it is better then try another notch. Choose which is best.

2002 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic clutch starter

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Where is the starter clutch located for 1100 v star 2004

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in the fuel system.
7. Water or dirt in the carburetor.*
8. Intake air leak.
9. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow.*
10. Enricher valve inoperative.*
11. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).
12. Ignition is not functioning properly (possible sensor failure).
13. Faulty ignition coil.
14. Valves sticking.
* Carbureted models.

I think it is between 2 or 4 thousth of an inch I set mine by ear you want it snug not overly tight or you will lose alot of power before you run the tappid down tight you need all tension of moter run the the adjustment down tight then back it off 1 quarter of a turn lock jam nut down and try there you may be able to go back tighten them a little more hope that will help quiet that noisy upper end down best of luck

2005 1100 vstar wont start. srarter working fine. pistons & valves are not moving at all ran perfectly the day before. 8500 miles. help me

If the bike ran well the day before, and nothing strange like no oil in the crankcase is going on, then the bike is likely to be fine. What isn't fine is the starter. The starter motor may be running fine but if the starter gear does not engage then the pistons are not going to move. It is time to call the dealer and talk with them as to repair or replacement cost. If replaced, keep the old starter for parts.

You may also want to check out a starter from a wrecked bike. Google " motorcycle salvage yamaha ". Chances are you can get a good starter for cheap.
