Question about 1981 Yamaha XS 650 H

1 Answer

This bike is a complete rebuild project. i havent finished checking the continuity on all the wires in the harness. I can get it to turn over by jumping the starter solenoid. and ive checked to seeif imgetting fire to the plugs. ...now, the plug will ark tothe engine if iholdit away but when it comes into contact with the engine(as it would be in the head) theres no fire at all.

    thanks tom

  • mike forcum Apr 21, 2009

well the battery is new however when i got it last fall i never put it on the charger. and the starter was slow at the time

that i first put the juice in it. this bike wont run for a while. i'll just be happy to get all the controls and lighting to function properly. this bike was sitting out side leaned up against a garage for like six years. so i have a ring and valve job to do as well. IM VERY GREATFULL for all the parts leads i can get.

  • mike forcum Apr 21, 2009

    ya ive been kindalooking

i took the bike for free on a bet that i couldnt bring it back tolife.lol

Try a brand new plug. It sounds like the carbon on the old plug is putting the spark to ground instead of jumping from the electrode. If you are already using a new plug then the spark is too weak to jump the gap.

Please rate this solution. Thanks Mike!

Hold up on the coil. Run a jumper cable from your car to the battery. NOW see if you have good spark.
Sounds like a battery that may not hold a charge. When the battery is low all the juice goes to the starter. Not enough left for a good spark. Kick it and enough juice MAY be there for the spark. Once running for a short bit the battery gets recharged so the bike works all day. Then the battery dissipates the charge overnight.

Before you spend $40or so on a battery, look to see if there is water covering the top of the battery plates. If so then the current battery needs to be put on a charger and maybe be replaced. If not enough water in the cells, add water to cover the top of the plates and ride it for a day. See if it holds a charge now. Battery may still be bad but it was worth a shot.

By the way, Google " motorcycle salvage yamaha " you can often get good used parts there. Also Google " vintage yamaha parts ".

  • tombones Apr 21, 2009

Maybe you could find another whole bike for parts.

I am hoping for a top fixya rating from all this ya know. :)

My reward for all 752 answers I have given and the 251 "FixYa" ratings is pride and pleasure. Pride in what I know and pleasure helping others. As to the chain, If you put the chain on backwards the engine will run backwards. You see, the problem is I am telling you about things on your Chrysler that are only bs... Just thought I might get a reaction and a smile from a nutball answer. Put the chain on any way you want.

No Lights on Rear. All work when either the turn signal is turned on or break is pulled 2003 Harley Ultra

Hi, Anthony I own the exact same bike in the gun metal blue Anniversary Edition, before diagnosing any turn signal/running light/parking light issue make sure the bulb is good and the light fuse has continuity with a test light. If you have replaced you OEM lights with LED lights you are going to need a load equalizer. If no turn signals work the cause could be a faulty turn signal module or the connector going to it, look for corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets. Contact spray cleaner is great for removing corrosion. If your speedometer does not function properly it will have to be fixed first because your turn signal module gets the data from the speedometer for normal turn signal function. If your front turn signals don't work use a test light to check for power and ground at the bulb socket, then start backtracking the wiring through every wire connector to the turn signal switch/button and check for continuity, go all the way back to the fuse if necessary to find the cause of the malfunction. If your rear turn signals don't work check your rear fender wiring harness connector first for corroded, broken, loose pins/sockets, power, and a good ground, (the harness connector is usually located under the seat on the front of the rear fender) then keep tracing the wiring look for obvious harness damage caused by the rear tire. If you still can't find the malfunction backtrack from the rear fender wiring harness connector. If one side does not work you could have a faulty turn signal switch or module check for continuity.

HONDA CBR600F4I FI LIGHT STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY WHAT IS PROBLEM

Hi, Vijay it should be noted that the reasons your EFI light stays on constant or is flashing, and the bike will or will not start, turns over or not the conditions varies from the year, make, and model and you should always refer to your owners/service manual for proper diagnostic procedures. It should also be noted that any type of prior work or event IE: adding accessories, electrical curiosity/adventures, laying bike down/crashes, rainstorms/bike washings just before EFI light issues started can be significant hints/aids into tracking down the gremlin, also carry the appropriate jumper wire to access fault codes to reduce the risk of being stranded or towed, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty Fuel Pump, fuse or system relay switch.
2. Battery starting to fail due to old age/damage, perform a load test.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty switches/sensors: run/off, ignition, clutch lever, neutral, side stand, tip over, fuel, and or their connections.
5. Broken wire or worn insulation exposing wire to a ground situation especially inside wire harness at tight bends around fairing brackets, under dash panels, under fuel tanks over cylinder heads etc. Many harnesses are open on the ends that will allow water to enter and accumulate at v-bends.
Dielectric grease and contact cleaner are your best friends for wire/cable/harness connectors, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets. For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below. Good luck and have a nice day.

Jp has the harness and easy to follow instructions, if you already have
the harness, and the old one is still on the bike. you could strip down
and tag each wire before pulling harness . use old harness to apply
new harness , everything will be the same. some connections may
need to be added, but this is minor .
