Popping exhaust while idling

While idling, I sometimes hear a popping from my exhaust. It pops a few times and then stops for a few minutes then it pops again. Car had a multi point check at VW and came up clean. Not sure what the problem is.

Did you check the compression? If the compression is low then the most probable cause is the valves bent. Means the head has to come off.
If the compression is ok then have you got the HT leads on the right way or is the ignition timing ok. Check the resistance in the leads they have a tendancy to break down.

SOURCE: 1991 VW Cabriolet runs rough during idle

Check the hose between the inletmanifold and the pipe to the brakeservo it normally gets old and a crack in so the engine sucks false air on cylinder 4, causing engine to run rough or uneven.

SOURCE: sluggish loss of power and popping noises from engine

I Have a 1995 Dodge Ram truck and it will once in awhile make popping noises or backfires through exhaust, then i lose power. but if i let off the accelerator it's ok until i step on the pedal, even if i peg it to the floor. I changed my spark plugs, but it still happens.Like i said though it doesn't happen all the time just occasionally.

Popping noises

This is normally a sign of a leaking exhaust valve, it is too tight. the popping is unburned fuel leaking into the exhaust and then exploding with the exhaust from the next firing, sorry but a big job

Fuel Tank Loud Pop Sound On Shutdown

Just a thought...did you buy a key type gas tank cap...maybe it is defective or the wrong one and does not allow venting properly and the tank pops when pressure is relieved. You could also have a bad evaporative cannister.

96 Ranger, "popping" sounds from Engine compartment

if it has been awhile since the belt was changed it may be a good idea to change it and get a timing light and check the timing also make sure the beads in the catalytic converter is not releasing and starting to plug up the exhaust system

96 Ranger, "Popping" coming from engine compartment

Possibly you have a leaky or cracked exhaust manifold. After the engine heats the metal expands and creates a larger gap. As the engine speeds up the engine noise overcomes the exhaust leak noise and you don't really notice it much until the vehicle gets in to a hard pull or comes to and idle.
