Question about 2004 Sym Husky 125
If you hear a tapping noise from the gearbox then you have a broken gear tooth. Is the sound is present in all the gears or just in one or two gears? If the tapping is present in all gears then the busted tooth is on the clutch hub or the crankshaft drive gear. This is good because it is easier to fix than a broken transmission gear.
If the tapping is just in one or two gears then you will need to remove the engine for a complete tear down. In any event, ALWAYS replace gears in sets. Replace the broken gear and the gear that it meshes with. Don't replace both gears and you will soon wish you did. ALWAYS replace gears in sets.

Your scooter doesn't have a gearbox as sutch it has a cvt .constant variable transmision go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yRskb0BYwE&feature=related and you should get an idea how it works .as for tapping noises it could be quit a few things ,timing chains on sym bikes are a noise that happens alot .but without seeing the scooter it;s imposible to say ,take it to a reputable scooter shop (other wise they might think it has gears like most who don't understand scooters)to have a good look
