The vacuum lines under my gas tank have dry rotted and come loose i need a diagram or spec to figure out where they connect back to

Back of the seat remove the fender bolt..on both sides of the seat where your *** sits are two large torque bolts...You dont have to remove the tank Heritadge has fatbob tanks..remove the 1/2 inch nut holding down your speedometer raise it up and your wire will run through their. you have two seperate tanks their is space between them on the frame.

SOURCE: remove 2009 fxstb softail gas tank

I haven't worked on an '09 model but all the Softails I ever worked on had two tanks. To remove them, first remove the dash and any thing covering the "tank gap". There are three bolts on each tank half, two in the front of the tank and one at the rear. There is also two hoses that connect the two tanks to each other. One in front that is the fuel crossover. Make sure you drain as much fuel out of the tanks as possible before removing this line. Still there will be some gasoline spill out so don't be smoking while doing this job. The other hose is a vent hose at the top of the tanks under the dash. It just vents the left tank to the right one since the left tank gas cap does not have a vent built into it. If it did, gasoline would spill out when the tanks were full and you put the bike on the side stand. You may not have to remove both tanks to install your bars. I don't know where the handle bar wiring harness connects under the tanks.

If you had gasoline in your oil, there's only two ways for it to get there. It either came through the carb or someone poured it in there.

I've been messing with Harley's since 1966, back before they created these cute little names for the engines like Panheads, Shovelheads, Evolution, Blockhead, Fathead. We only had two engines, Sportster 61 cu. in, and the 74 cu. in. in the big bikes.

Now, the way the fuel got into your gasoline was through the carb. If you've ever watched an old timer get off his bike, he'll reach under the tank and turn the fuel off. This was keep what happened to you from happening. It worked every time. The problem these days is in their infinite wisdom, Harley has adopted the misguided conception that the Japs started, the vacuum operated petcock. The absolute worst invention man has ever designed and put on a motor vehicle.

Now, in both the petcock and the float bowl of the carb you have a "needle and seat" all it takes is one very small bit of trash to cause the gasoline to seep past the needle. Keep in mind now that gasoline has a lower viscositiy than water. It will go where water won't go. It's thinner. A lot of gasoline can seep past a needle and seat in a 12 hour period. I've seen fuel tanks empty themselves in that time.

I've fixed many bikes that had the vacuum operated petcocks on them. They started putting them on the bike in 1996. I've seen people stranded beside the road with full tanks of fuel but not a drop getting to the carb. I've seen gasoline pouring out the small vacuum line (probably what happened to you) after the engine had been flooded out due to a ruptured diaphragm. And, I've even seen a couple of cases where the engine was sucking air through the petcock and would not idle or even run very well.

Now, when you change the oil on a harley engine, you don't get all the oil out of it like you do on car engine or a Japper engine. There will be a certain amount of oil left in the top of the heads and the camchest. Also, the gasoline fills up the crankcases that are supposed to be empty of oil. If you have a quart of gasoline that has run down past the rings into the crankcase, you now have one extra quart of fluid in your oil system. Whenever I suspect something like what happened to you, I always take the spark plugs out and spin the engine over a few times to get any excess fluid out of the crankcase. It will blow it out of the crankcase vents which in your case is in the heads. Those big bolts that hold the air filter backing plate on are hollow and are actually crankcase vents.

So, in short, my suggestion is to take that vacuum operated petcock off your bike, plug up the vacuum hose, and purchase a high quality manually operated petcock like a Pingle. They're expensive but if you get into the habit of turning it off whenever you get off your bike, this problem will NEVER happen to you again.

BTW:, you need to check your primary oil to see if it's been diluted as well. The gasoline will go past the sprocket shaft seal and contaminate that oil as well. You're pretty safe on the transmission lube though.

SOURCE: gas leak from quick connect on gas line under tank

Hi, there is an o-ring (or possibly 2 o-rings) inside the female QD fitting. Replace the o-ring and make sure the return spring is pulling the fitting closed. If not, replace the line/fitting.

under the hood, you will see a few different small black hoses running to various things.
Just check them all out.
Indeed that rot /vacuum loss is a common issue.

I have a 2000 softail, after running for 10 minutes it dies,then sits for 10 min. then will start again but only run for another 2 min until it dies again

7. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.

Smell gas not everyday no puddles no dripping


might be the RETURN line back to tank, most overlooked fuel line in the world, sends unburnt fuel & FUMES back to tank & or engine, recycled fuel. these lines rust, rot, subject to salt corrosion, etc., OR, vapor leaks from the evaporativeemissions control system (charcoal canister filter clogged) check condition of all hoses (vacuum) and fuel ...... or your main fuel line is leaking you just can't see it without a complete, thorough inspection !!!!! is fuel fliter leaking @ filter? connections ......

I have a 97 v6 mustang and the cel is on and shows p1443 had someone check and they said its a sensor in the gas tank was wondering if its the ftp sensor

The faulty component is called the Canister Purge Solenoid (CPS...See diagram below of Vapor System for your engine...Also pictured is the CPS...It is not in the gas tank but mounted near it...Follow the vacuum lines and check for breaks, rotting or loose connections before you buy a new CPS.................Guru..................Saailer

Were is the fuel filter located on a harley davidson 1998 heritage softail very sluggish an hard to start wont idle properly an back fires at times


Filter is in the fuel tank attached to the fuel petcock. Check your intake gaskts for an air leak. Get the bike running and squirt some brake clean near the intake seals and see if the bike dies or idle increases, but dont squirt too much to get sucked in the air cleaner. Also check the vacuum lines going from the fuel petcock to the carb for dry rotted or loose connections.

a manifold leak ,dry-rotted vacuum lines also contribute to high rpm ....is there any visible signs of gasoline on the ground try using a piece of cardboard to see if any fluid gets on it also open the hood and check for visible leaks or missing cracked vacuum lines etc but sounds like a vacuum leak

possibly cracked or dry-rotted vacuum lines are being moved in just the right spot to allow it to run for a period of time until it becomes jarred again visually look for unattached vacuum lines and dry-rotted lines

I have a John Deere 116 not getting gas to the filter or carb


It shouldn't have a electric fuel pump. What I would do first is take the gas tank off. Take the fuel line off. Drain the gas tank. blow thru the fuel line.put all back on and fill with gas and try again. I'm guessing it sat for awhile. when gas sits for awhile it gets tarnished.any little bit od debris that was in the gas tank could plug the fuel line. Hope that helps You out.
