I'm not too familiar with Triumphs but assuming your bike has carbs and not fuel injection, then it is time to clean the fuel system. Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Install an in-line fuel filter.

For each carb > Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plugs and start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

You may want to go to a richer main jet. If the jet is (for example) a 178 then change to a 180 or 182. This should fix the top end problem. Do this only if cleaning the carbs doesn't work.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Hi, Sean and the usual suspects are:

1999 triumph trophy it runs fine when first crank it up . then you go down the road and it justs died let it sit for a min. then it will crank right back up and do it again . i have put a new battery on it...

It's your crank angle pick up for your ignition timing. When they fail they go open circuit when hot then at cold they close again so hard to diagnose as resistance reading will be fine when cold. About 45 GBP for a genuine triumph one. About an hours work to fit it inside right hand crank shaft end cover.

Intermittant power lose on 1996 tronph trophy 1200. 15000 miles

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, most bikes of this class would exhibit the problem you posted if they have loose/faulty:
  • RUN or KILL engine switch;
  • side stand switch;
  • or as the mechanic thinks, the CDI.
You can try and verify by simulating the first two possibilities by riding on a straight road at regular speed and with no traffic.
  • Accelerate as you normally would then switch off the RUN; do the same for the side stand, even a slight extend from rest position would kill the engine.
I doubt if it is fuel related as normally, there would be hesitation and starvation before finally stalling.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

I think you would be better of checking the ignition pick-up located on the right side engine cover. you may want consider searching for info on the ignition pickup, as apparently it is a weak link on these engines. That was the first thing i repalced when i got got mine as it had sat for a while.
