Question about 2003 Honda VTX 1300 Retro

Bike backfiring cutting out, now wont start

I think it's the coil or ECM unit. the bike is for sure getting fuel. All wiring looks good and connections. Bad coil or Ecm? 2003 Honda VTX s model 1300

    Check and see if you are getting fire to any of your spark plugs. Let me know if you are or aren't. We'll go from there.

The pick-up coil next to the stator could be bad as well.

2003 Honda VTX 1800 FI light intermittently coming on


Hi, Chuck it should be noted that the reasons your FI light stays on constantly or flashes and your bike will or will not start and may turn over or not, these conditions will vary from bike to bike depending on the year, make, and model and you should always refer to your owners/service manual for proper diagnostic procedures. It should also be noted that any type of prior work done to the bike or an abnormal event occurrence IE: adding accessories, electrical curiosity/adventures, laying the bike down/crashes, rain storms/bike washings just before FI light issues started can be significant hints/aids into tracking down the gremlin. The newer the bike the more sensitive the ECM becomes and will not let the bike start when aftermarket accessories have been installed without being reprogrammed. That being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty Fuel Pump, fuse or system relay switch.
2. Battery starting to fail due to old age/damage, perform a load test.
3. A discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty safety switches/sensors: run/off, ignition, clutch lever, neutral, side stand, tip over, fuel, and or their connections.
5. Broken wire or worn insulation exposing wire to a ground situation especially inside wire harness at tight bends around fairing brackets, under dash panels, under fuel tanks over cylinder heads etc. Many harnesses are open on the ends that will allow water to enter and accumulate at v-bends.
Dielectric grease and contact cleaner are your best friends for wire/cable/harness connectors, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets.
6. Installation of aftermarket accessories ie. exhaust systems, mufflers, air cleaners, fuel tuners, electrical component etc.

I have a 2003 ford cv with a misfire on cylinder 6; THIS IS WHAT I change,new coil 5,6 new fuel injector 5,6 all 8 spark plug! Still the check engine light comes on .


code p 0306 refers to cylinder 6-- misfire detected ====causes --engine mechanical fault--wiring---ignition/fuel system--injector---ECT/MAF sensor---ECM
the mechanical fault can be
problem hydraulic lifter holding a valve partially open
loose valve seat insert
a compression test will determine if there is a mechanical problem as for the rest , check all connections for clean /tight terminals
substitute the ECM with a know good unit to eliminate it
substitute the ECT/MAF sensor with a known good unit
run the fault codes again as engine lights report on a variety of faults as well as the transmission faults

I have a 2003 dodge ram with a 4.7. I am getting code p0335 crankshaft position sensor A.


code p0335 refers to crankshaft position (CKP) sensor --circuit malfunction====causes ---wiring---ckp sensor ---ecm
you have checked the wires from ecm connection to sensor connection and eliminated the wires and connections so that only leaves a problem ECM
try substituting the ECM with a known good unit and see it the code is eliminated

Whats wrong when your riding and the bike starts cutting out, backfiring, then just goes dead?


The first thing that you can check is the fuel pump, wiring and fuel filter. The power wires coming from the ignition, sometimes get corroded. the symptoms sounds like fuel starvation.

Vtx1300 running on one cylinder


Hi, Anonymous you need "FIVE" things in order for a cylinder to run properly:
1. FUEL: in order to validate your not getting fuel spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner and hit the starter button, if it fires up and runs for a few seconds then you know you have a fuel delivery issue. Multi carb banks should be bench "SYNC"
2. SPARK: remove the spark plug and with it connected to the spark plug cable ground the threads to something metal you should see a bluish white spark if not you have a faulty spark plug, spark plug cable, ignition coil, condenser, CKP, ECM, sensor or the wiring in between.
3. COMPRESSION: you must have at least 80-100 PSI for most bikes, multi-cylinder engines should be within 10-15% of each other if not perform a leak down test you may have a burnt or bent valve or hole in the piston or broken rings.
4. CAM TIMING: confirm your timing marks are aligned to see if the cam chain or adjuster are worn out and the chain has skipped a couple teeth.
5. IGNITION TIMING: on older bikes check to see if your points have not closed up, timing plate has not become loose and confirm with a timing light for proper retard and advance functions, on newer bikes where timing is controlled by an ECM and is nonadjustable check you CKP, TPS, MAP, O2, sensor or its counterpart for integrity.

Bike cuts out at running temperature


You actually may have two problems. First, if you have a spark from a coil, find out why. May be a bad or loose connection. when coils get hot their resistance increases. A leak or bad connection will show up quicker when hot. If the spark comes from the body of the coil, replace it.
Second, your starter may be breaking down when hot. Check the brushes and coils in the starter motor. The same discussion about loose connections also will apply to the starter.

Bike wont start


Check the fuel tap is turned on and that the fuel filter is clean. If this is all good, you should check that fuel is getting into the fuel reservoir on the carb. If no fuel is getting through, your fuel pump may have failed. But, as you don't say the make and model of your bike, I can't be sure.

My 2007 VTX 1300 Retro started sputtering, lost acceleration, top speed dropped to 70? Bike has 8200 miles. When I bought it about 2 months ago it had around 7300. Had been setting up. Ran good but...


Hi Jim, and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking.
3. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Damaged wire or loose/broken connections at battery terminals/cables, especially the "NEGATIVE" cable at both ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intake air leak.
8. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, carburetor and/or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
10. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
11. Damaged carburetor.
12. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
13. Faulty MAP, CKP, and/or CMP sensors.
14. Incorrect valve timing.
15. Weak or broken valve springs.
16. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
