First of all, your question is posted under motorcycles instead of automobiles. The Isuzu KB series was manufactured between 1980 and 1988 and sold under several different names. Yours could have had one of 4 different gasoline engines depending on model year, your location, and ordered options. In any case regular leaded gasoline is rated at 89 octane while regular unleaded is rated at 87 octane. Octane is a measure of the resistance to burning, and a lower octane rated fuel will ignite at a lower temperature. What this means in a gasoline engine is that a lower rated fuel than what it was manufactured for will ignite before the piston reaches the top of its stroke which results in spark knock. If you do notice any spark knock after the switch to regular unleaded then try using mid-grade gasoline, which depending on refinery runs between 89-91 octane. The knock should go away. If you insist on running regular unleaded, then you will need to retard the timing 2-3 degrees from what the factory specification says on the sticker under the hood and/or owners manual. For example if it calls for 8 degrees BTDC (before top dead center) then reduce it to 5 degrees BTDC and the knock should go away. Keep in mind this will reduce the power output of your engine since the fuel and ignition are not what the engine was designed for.

You should not have to adjust the timing. The timing dictates when the cylinder will receive its spark to ignite the fuel in the chamber.

I hope that you have found this information to be useful, and if I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using fixya!

I have a Isuzu D/C 4x4 KB 260 1997 Do I use unleaded or leaded petrol

I am assuming since you posted this question you are not US based where leaded petrol has been phased out since late 70's. The Isuzu KB260 truck was manufactured to use Unleaded petrol. Lead was added to be a lubricant in older engines that were hand machined in factories LONG ago... the valves and all werent as close in tolerance and the lead in teh gas helped keep them in shape. Newer engines, such as your Isuzu, utilize computer machining during assembly and the tolerances are more precise....so the lead is not required. Be sure and use Unleaded in your vehicle.

Fuel pump keep going out in my 2002 isuzu rodeo

check the relay, it could be stuck in the closed position causing the pump to run 100% of the time the key is on. it should shut off when the fuel pressure is at operating range. like a well pump on a house, it needs to start and stop with the pressure difference. if it runs continuously it will burn up fast.

Isuzu 1997 KB 260 Workshop Manual

try haynes.com or your local parts store for a Haynes manual.  For around $20 they are frequently as good or better for home mechanic than factory manuals for $100.

Unleaded fuel

Hi,

Am afraid nothing much you can do since you have to make do with what is locally available. However, a couple of things you can keep in mind:
1. Using leaded fuel with a car intended to use unleaded fuel would destroy your car's catalytic converter faster than normal wear and tear;
2. At times unleaded would be available, pls use as much as possible to help clean/remove the lead additive, tetraethyllead that will cover some soft engine parts with the lead-containing material;
3. you may have to tune your engine's timing to compensate for the leaded fuel.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
