Question about Honda XL 125 R Motorcycles

Bike wont start

My sons honda qr 50 wont start , it has plenty of spark , i have pulled the carby down an cleaned it fuel is making its way through the carby to the spark plug there is plenty of spark , i feel the carb setting may be off a bit can you give me a rough idea how many turns out i should turn the mixture & idle screws to a point where i should at least get it trying to start

    hey thanks bones bht still no luck i'll maybe have more time to play around tomorrow as its my day off :) ,do you think there could be another cause, at this stage on those settings -not even a crackle plenty of spark , plenty of fuel , carb set ,dead as a doornail .

    is there anything else i should be checking ?

    any input is appreciated

    the bike is a mid eighties model it has cdi , no points to be found !!

    did a comp test yesterday takes three or four kicks it comes up to about 110 to 120 clean air filter i've even tried removing the filter and just going through the box , could it be the crank seal ?

    hey thanks for that , i now know where to go next i'll be sure to check bearings , ports etc. as you said .

    i'll be working on this when i have time to as i have a couple of other projects on the boil at the moment , thanks for your input and be sure i'll keep you guys posted as to the results !!!

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Clean the air filter. Install a new stock NGK spark plug.

    What year is the QR50? I thought they stopped making those back in the early eighties. Doesn't your bike have ignition points? They probably need adjusted and a reset of ignition timing.

    What year is your bike? CDI or points? Got compression? Air cleaner plugged up?

    Okay. I am to speed now. I looked on the web and found some photos. Cute bike! I was thinking QA50 not QR50. The old QA was a four stroke with a weak crankshaft. Yes, considering the bike is 20 plus years old, a small investment in new crank seals would not hurt even if that isn't the problem. Seals are easy providing you can get the flywheel off. Get a flywheel puller if need be. Low cost and handy to have around. If you don't have a 3/8" impact driver I would get one. This will loosen or tighten all screws and bolts on the bike. You will need to tighten the flywheel nut and the crank gear nut; piece of cake with the impact driver.

    Compression is good enough to run the bike. Before doing the seals check the crank bearings. Hold the flywheel in your hand. Lift it up and down then move it left and right. Any movement or is it rock solid? If movement then you will need to take the engine apart and install new crank bearings.

    While you are checking things, pull the cylinder head and de-carbon the head and cylinder. Run the piston down and check the exhaust port. Over the years carbon may have built up in the port and plugged it nearly closed. It should be about the size of the intake port. Remove the buildup to allow the engine to breathe.

Check that the spark plug boots aren't wet or worn. Sometimes the spark leaks to the cylinder head.

I have a 92 yamaha 350 warrior rebuilt the carb new stater and pick up coil I have it in time and plenty of spark and compression but still wont start.....

if spark and good compression ..just leaves fuel

will it start with fuel down the carb ?
not flooding
jets adjusted correctly

would say the old carby has had it.. worn out

needs a new one

My sons honda qr 50 wont start full engine strip dwn all new gaskets etc will start from engine start just wont keep going,the problem is with the choke i think as it is snapped my question is do u need...

If it's cold, you need the choke to richen the fuel mixture until the engine warms up. Use your hand to partially cover the air intake. Once it starts, use your hand to feather the amount of air you allow to the engine until it smoothes out.

My 5.5 honda engine on my lawnmower will start but wont stay running already cleaned the carb out didnt help there is no restrictions in the fuel lines im lost please help

it sounds like a fuel problem.
first drian fuel out of tank.
i know you have already cleaned the carby but dis assemble carby and clean with carby cleaner.
re assemble carby & fill tank with fresh fuel.
also clean air filter & check oil level & check spark plug,if the spark plug is black and the tip is blocked with oil build up, then replace.

Fuel goes from tank to carby but doesn't start. (air and spark ok) Do I need to remove the carby? How do I best do that?

standard diagnoses procedure - make sure you have good compression, make sure you have spark, make sure you are getting fuel to carby, if you have compression & spark and fuel to carby bowl then you probably have blocked jets in carby

I would first fill the tank with fresh fuel especialy if the bike has stood for any length of time also determine as to wether or not fuel is actualy reaching the barrrels remove the spark plugs & check if they are wet or dry if they are found to be dry open the drain plugs on the carby float bowls if fuel runs out of the drain it must be asumed that your broblemis carburation & will require the carbies to be removed stripped & cleaned this will involve the removal of all the jets the float & the needle & seat once these have all bean cleaned thoroughly [compressed air is usefull for this part of the operation] &reasembled return them to the machine &

When trying to start fuel pours from the carby

Been there done that, Carb needle stuck in the open position. Do NOT try to start it this way as if a cylinder fills with fuel it will hydrolock and cranking the engine can break expensive things. If you need to crank it pull the 3 spark plugs on the effected side and crank it over to remove the fuel from the flooded cylinders. This may require carb. removal and tear down if tapping on the carb bowls doesn't fix it. Same thing happened to my 1999 Valk. Interstate.

Hi Dino,
You have sparks and the carbys have fuel in crank it and it doesn't fire up.....have you tried to use the choke?
After a lot of cranking remove one of the spark plugs and see if its wet with fuel.
I feel probabely the fuel is not entering the combustion chamber.

1985 honda prelude will not start

Sounds like a bad starter or teeth missing of the flexplate or flywheel. Is it a stickshift? Can you push start it?
