Question about Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX Motorcycles

14.02 volts at idle increase to 5000 rpm voltage drops to 13.51 do i have a problem if so any clue as to what it may be

1984 virago 1000 that at idle is puttting out 14.02 volts .sounds good but when rpm is increased to 5000 reading on meter drops to 13.52.is this ok or do i have a problem

1984 Virago 1000 starts and runs great to 2500 rpm then it quits


Hi, Karen and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery must have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Fuel tank empty
11. Fuel tank contaminated with ethanol sludge.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, or clogged filter.
13. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
14. Faulty fuel pump.
15. Faulty pressure regulator.
16. Faulty or clogged fuel injectors.
17. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.

1984 yahama virago 1000 that cuts out at 2500rpm as though I shut the key off, starts and runs great till then, why?

Why does the voltage drop to battry volts when i put the gear lever in drive?


the voltage should remain at 14.5 volts at all engine speeds above idle 13.9 volts at idle indicates that the alternator is charging but not at set voltage
head lights are the biggest drain that affects charge rate rate and it it maintains and from you description that is not a problem
when you select a gear it indicates a heavy drain which is a high resistance or a dead short in that circuit that is taking out more power than the alternator is charging
There there is nothing in the gear selection that draws such power
the other thing is that when selection a gear the engine rpm is tool low and the alternator stops charging
for auto vehicles , the idle rpm should be at 800-900 rpm dropping to 750-800 in drive

1996 Virago battery not charging


Hi, Michael the systems check below is geared towards Harley Davidson so exact numbers might differ slightly with book specs on your bike but the basic principal is the same, in order to check out any main electrical system, you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better, and be able to pass a load test if necessary. "WARNING" never plug or unplug any electrical connector with the engine running !!!
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is "GROUNDED" and functioning properly, watch the video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the multimeter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty alternator rotor.
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the multimeter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator multimeter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

Idling issue


Most likely cause is your egr valve. Or a map sensor. They are both easy fixes.

My XV535 1987 Virago Bike has a new battery and the bike runs until it drains the battery I checked the voltage at IDLE it was 12.05 v and at revving up 12.96 V so I checked online and ordered

Battery wont charge with engine running


Hi, Xinia in order to check out any main electrical system, you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better, and be able to pass a load test if necessary. "WARNING" never plug or unplug any electrical connector with the engine running !!!

Test for charging


take a voltage indicator, and put the wires of the tool on the batery. each wire one each pole of the batery. Black to black, red to red. Turn on the engine, and increase the idle speed until aprox. 6000 rpm. the voltage indicator should indicate voltage from aprox. 12 Volts to aprox 15 volts. if the volt are not increasing with the engine rpm, is mostly a charging relay issue.
At the idle speed, the voltmeter should indicate minimum 12,5 -13 volts. If not, the same issue.
The test should be made with the battery charged and in great working condition.

85 virago 1000 breaks down rpm


I have a 95 yamaha virago with 12,000 miles on it. The tick is normal... The backfiring is not, back pressure is cuz of the drive shaft. I had a similar problem when cracking the throttle at a high rpm. check you plugs for fouling and gap. clean them and regap to around .030. sand inbetween the electrode and outer pin and the outer pin. if the electrode is shot replace them but remember to gap it. should fix your problem. good luck.
