Yeah thanks for that. i thought maybe a valve seat was stuffed.bike is over 20 yrs old and its the first road bike ive owned. ive had plenty of dirt bikes but they are a whole lot different. I can fix it myself but finding the problem through a bike shop costs a fortune. i will try that and see what happens. thank you very much!

Is the compression release operating properly? Is it stuck open a bit? Is the head gasket blown? Normal compression is 125psi to 150psi. This sounds like a stuck compression release, blown head gasket or burned valves. A mechanic will need to pull the cylinder head and do a valve job on it if the compression release or gasket is not the problem.

If you pull the head, check the cylinder walls, piston and rings. I would at least hone the cylinder and install new rings. Now would be a good time to consider boring the cylinders and installing new pistons and rings. Do that and add another 20 years to the bike. If ya wanna have fun, find a camshaft builder to alter the OHC to be a hotter cam. Nothing too extreme, just what is commonly known as a "race cam". Trust me, your slug won't be a slug anymore.

Hi, just looking at my 88 Savage, it looks like there are 2 float bowl vents--one on each side. I can see the passages from outside the carb going down from the ports to the float bowl. One hose routes down and the other up under the tank. There is also a vacuum line to the fuel valve to shut the valve off when the engine is off. That port is on the lower right side of the carb, and the hose wraps around to the valve on the other side. If you have a california bike, there is also supposed to be an EVAP hose from the carb to the fuel tank. I don't know where you can get pictures online, but I have a manual for the 86-88 Savage.
