Question about 1994 Honda VT 1100 C Shadow

I have to let my clutch out far

I have to let my clutch handle out far for it to catch when the bike get to running temp!!

What is going on??

    Does your particular bike have a clutch cable or hydraulic clutch? The bike came both ways.

Lets assume you have the hydraulic clutch. Now let's start by bleeding the clutch.

  • Put the handlebars in position to have the hydraulic cylinder as level as possible. Remove the reservoir cover and diaphragm. Don't let clutch fluid get on plastic or painted parts. The finish will be damaged. Add fluid to the line level on master cylinder casing.
  • Remove left rear crankcase cover.
  • Remove cap from the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder Put a box end wrench on the bleed valve then put a clear hose on the nipple and immerse the end of the hose in clean brake fluid.
  • Pump the clutch lever at moderate speed to eliminate air through the master cylinder. Tap the cylinder to release air clinging to the line. Do this until no more bubbles rise from the cylinder.
  • Now pump the lever several times and hold the lever in. Crack open the bleed valve and let fluid and air bubbles escape into the clear hose . Close the bleeder then release the lever slowly. Wait a few seconds then repeat the process until no more bubbles are coming from the bleeder. Keep an eye on the reservoir and add fluid as needed.
  • Remove the clear hose and put all parts back into position.
Let me know if this fixed the problem. If not we will go further.

Won't go into gear without engine running, starter just spins without catching.

My bike will start but when i try to put it in gear i will go but its like not catching and i can move the bike in gear and all you hear is a click click click and i can't ride it

How do I adjust the clutch? The bike stalls out when I put it gear.


You can try adjusting the clutch cable.
There is a lock ring where the cable meets the clutch handle.
Loosen lock ring then turn the knurled knob in or out depending on your "taste". Typically the shop guys make this adjustment far too tight with little to no play at the top first pull of the handle. Adjust to your comfort zone but try to leave at least a 1/4 inch play when you first pull the clutch handle. You can actually feel the clutch disengage as you pull the handle. Too much and the symptoms you describe appear to the problem now. If the clutch is gone it will need to be replaced and no amount of cable adjustment will help.

Im having trouble with my 2002 rm 250 clutchs... when i start to run the bike the cluth get like stuck or something and wildly releases at any moments and the bike runs off... its barely imposble to run...


  • A couple of things could be wrong. The clutch cable center wire could be frayed and catching up on the outer shell.
  • The clutch cable is bent or has been hit and crushed.
  • The outer and/or inner clutch hub is grooved and the friction plates are hanging up in the grooves.
  • You changed the gearbox oil and put in synthetic oil or an oil with "Special" additives. Synthetics can swell the cork on the friction plates and cause problems. Only use 10w40 motor oil in the gearbox.
  • A bad needle bearing at the pressure plate or on the shaft
  • The clutch was re-assembled incorrectly.

Start bike in nutral hold in clutch put into first and imediately stalls


G'Day mate,
Sounds like the bike has a stuck clutch, where the pressure plates and clutch plates are not disengaging, probably from sitting for a while. Check the clutch adjustments first to see that you have good operation and tension in the clutch lever. To break it free, try first allowing the engine to heat up to operating temp, this can sometimes allow the clutch to free up with heat expansion.
If you can get the bike to a rolling start(mate pushing) and get into a gear, go roll on and off the throttle a few times with the clutch pulled in, see if you can break it loose. Some peps have success with wrapping wire about the handle bar holding the lever in, and let it sit over night, let the oil into the clutch plates.
Dont get too carried away with dropping it into gear with the engine running. You dont want to do more damage. If it remains an issue, you will have to remove the clutch cover and tear the clutch down. check plates for wear and warping. Replace if required. Good luck with it.

I Pull in the clutch handle but cannot shift the bike into gear. How do I tell if this is a clutch problem or a transmission problem?


When did this problem start? has the bike been sitting for any long period of time? any background on the bike leading to your problem would help.

1. will the bike shift into gear not running all gears check it first put the bike on the center stand and rotate the rear wheel and go through the gears shifting if that is ok your good
2. shifting into gear bike running does not want to go?
grinds or lurches forward? problems from sitting for long months or yrs. sometimes when a motorcycle sits the clutch plates that are in oil will act like they are glued together ans some time can be freed after the engine oil has warmed up, in worse case you have to remove the r/h clutch cover and remove the clutch pressure plate and separate each of clutch plates and reassemble it.

09 buell xb12r firebolt, problems when bike is running cant shift into nuetral


I have an 04 firebolt and sometimes it can be a chore getting nuetral on it also. Are you sure your not just skipping it by going to far with shift lever? I sometimes have to have it in 1st or 2nd and lightly let out on the clutch handle. Just enough that the clutch wants to ingage the gear . I rock the bike forward and back a little while looking for nuetral.

Clutch bite is too far away from handlebar


There should be about 1/8" end play on the clutch handle. Adjust the cable at the handlebars where the cable goes into the clutch lever housing. Screw the adjuster inward until the end play is present. Some bikes have an adjuster at the gearbox where the cable hooks up.
