Question about 1984 Honda VT 500 C Shadow

Motor bogs when you give it gas

I have the same problem with my 84' Honda Shadow VT 500 C. It seems like it is starving for fuel. It will run ok for just a couple of minutes
and then it boggs out. If I use the choke when it starts to bogg it recovers for a minute, but it doesn't last long. What the @*#& is wrong
with it?

No, I don't think so. The bike doesn't have to run long enough to get anything hot. This is a constant

problem. I can't even ride it because I can't get past my own driveway before it boggs out!

I don't have a diagram of how the vacuum lines are supposed to be hooked up. Do you have one?

  • tigwel_b Apr 17, 2009

Yes, I have removed and cleaned the carbs and they were dirty. Unfortunately someone else

removed the vacuum lines and I'm only guessing about where they go. So, now I think I've

probably got it all screwed up. Anyway, what do I do to register? Cause I need some kind of

visual assistance. I'm not, too, good with carburetors in the first place, much less two of them.

You have a vacuum leak... you need to trace those hoses that were removed.... and check the housing for the air filter all the way to the carb... and any gaskets from the carb to the motor.

It could be many things but your guess about fuel/air starvation seems right. Is there a clean flow of fuel from the tank? It could be vapour lock. What condition are the sparkplugs in? Is the airfilter clean? You can probably get the manual here but you have to register, and it's free. Have you removed and cleaned the carburettors? check floats, jets etc?

Hi,

This could be any thing from the ignition module. Have a diagnosis done on the system. This will save time and money in the long run.
This is what i believe what is wrong, the ignition coil housing is braking down when it gets hot.

sounds like an air leak. Have a good look around the inlet manifold,
check for any perishing, check the gasket is in good condiotion, check
the clamp onto the carb is tight, check there isnt a vaccum hose
    disconected, or indeed perished.

The way the idle is high and hangs when you rev the engine is a major
characteristic of an air leak on any vehicle, and is usually between
the carb and the engine itself.

Choke problems on 2002 honda shadow vt 600

Have you ridden your honda regularly or has it been parked for a while? If you have old fuel in the bike or possibly got bad gas somewhere you need to pull your carb and simply clean the clogged jets. If you have never done it before have an expert do the work. Also check your fuel filter first, if this is clooged it will restrict your gas flow and starve for fuel when accelerating.

I have a 1985 Honda VT500 Shadow. It bogs down at about 5500 rpm. I changed the 4 spark plugs, checked the air filter, took off the carbs and blew out the bowls, looked clean. Put back together and

there are many air channels in the carbs, witch can be dirty, clean them with very thin wire, and first bled out the gas, check the 2 diaphragms in the carbs

The fuel filter is in the tank on the petcock and is self cleaning. I suspect you have bad spark plug caps on your bike the cap is part of the wire. If you remove the wire and take a reading with an ohm meter, the cap should read 5000 ohms . Anything above or below and you should replace the cap. This is probably causing the slight miss.

This is more than likely a carb (fuel) issue. Start with verifing you correct float level. Next check for correct needle position, diaphram, and springs on same. Also check to make sure clip for "accelator pump" is in correct place. Hope this helps.

Motor bogs when you give it gas

It is a fuel problem, it can be filter or rubber membrane, they are placed in the valve for fuel.
