Question about 1984 Honda VT 500 C Shadow

Motor bogs when you give it gas

I have the same problem with my 84' Honda Shadow VT 500 C. It seems like it is starving for fuel. It will run ok for just a couple of minutes
and then it boggs out. If I use the choke when it starts to bogg it recovers for a minute, but it doesn't last long. What the @*#& is wrong
with it?

No, I don't think so. The bike doesn't have to run long enough to get anything hot. This is a constant

problem. I can't even ride it because I can't get past my own driveway before it boggs out!

I don't have a diagram of how the vacuum lines are supposed to be hooked up. Do you have one?

  • tigwel_b Apr 17, 2009

Yes, I have removed and cleaned the carbs and they were dirty. Unfortunately someone else

removed the vacuum lines and I'm only guessing about where they go. So, now I think I've

probably got it all screwed up. Anyway, what do I do to register? Cause I need some kind of

visual assistance. I'm not, too, good with carburetors in the first place, much less two of them.

You have a vacuum leak... you need to trace those hoses that were removed.... and check the housing for the air filter all the way to the carb... and any gaskets from the carb to the motor.

It could be many things but your guess about fuel/air starvation seems right. Is there a clean flow of fuel from the tank? It could be vapour lock. What condition are the sparkplugs in? Is the airfilter clean? You can probably get the manual here but you have to register, and it's free. Have you removed and cleaned the carburettors? check floats, jets etc?

Hi,

This could be any thing from the ignition module. Have a diagnosis done on the system. This will save time and money in the long run.
This is what i believe what is wrong, the ignition coil housing is braking down when it gets hot.

sounds like an air leak. Have a good look around the inlet manifold,
check for any perishing, check the gasket is in good condiotion, check
the clamp onto the carb is tight, check there isnt a vaccum hose
    disconected, or indeed perished.

The way the idle is high and hangs when you rev the engine is a major
characteristic of an air leak on any vehicle, and is usually between
the carb and the engine itself.

1983 Honda VT 500 C Shadow carburetor tuning

Hi, Joe your running lean, if you have changed your fuel delivery system, air filter size or flow rate, mufflers or exhaust system or a significant change in altitude your carburetors need re-tuning and if your fuel system (gas tank, filters, fuel valve and carburetor) is contaminated with ethanol sludge, varnish, rust, dirt, water etc. or your bike has been sitting for months or years without running these components must be "PROPERLY" cleaned and reassembled "CORRECTLY" before any adjustments can be made. Tuning your carburetor is fairly simple once you understand the basic principals. You engine is a simple airbox sucking air in and blowing it out, it is finely tuned at the factory for maximum performance once you upset that delicate balance by changing air filters, camshafts or exhaust systems your performance may go down the and the engine may run poorly, you need to compensate the air-fuel mixture in the carburetor in order for the engine to run smoothly and at peak performance. If you are running multi carburetors you need to sync them first and make sure your air cleaner element is clean and dry for paper elements or lightly oiled for foam and meshed elements and properly installed. Here is how and where you compensate trouble: "TIP" if your engine "BOGS" your not getting enough fuel.
1. Close to 1/8 throttle is managed by the air screw and pilot/slow jet.
2. 1/8 to 1/4 throttle is managed by the air-screw, pilot/slow jet, and throttle slide.
3. 1/4 to 1/2 throttle is managed by the throttle slide and jet needle.
4. 1/2 to 3/4 throttle is managed by the jet needle, needle jet, main jet, and air jet.
5. 3/4 to wide open throttle is managed by the main jet and air jet.
6. Wide open throttle is managed by the main jet.
If you are running lean, spark plug electrode color is white, engine runs hot and feels like it is starving for fuel you need to go up on the jet size or move the c-clip down one notch. If you are running rich, spark plug color is black or dark gray, the engine runs cool, and bogs down when accelerating you need to go down on jet size or move the c-clip up one notch. When your carburetor is properly tuned for maximum performance your spark plug electrode will be a light tan color like coffee with cream. If you prefer fuel economy over performance you can go down on main jet sizes until a satisfactory level of lower performance is acceptable versus MPH, your spark plug color will be whiter and your engine will run warmer. These tuning adjustments will only make improvements if your intake and exhaust system have no air leaks or sealing issues and the entire electrical system is in proper working order and you have no mechanical issues.

1984 VT 500 C Shadow: 1983 honda shadow -starts and runs, seems to miss ...

The fuel filter is in the tank on the petcock and is self cleaning. I suspect you have bad spark plug caps on your bike the cap is part of the wire. If you remove the wire and take a reading with an ohm meter, the cap should read 5000 ohms . Anything above or below and you should replace the cap. This is probably causing the slight miss.
