Question about 1991 Yamaha FZR 600

1 Answer

Bike wont start

I have a 91 yamaha fzr 600 R van hines edition. New battery, new plugs, when i push the start button nothing happens but a click in the cylinoid. anyone with an idea would be greatfull. It used to take a long time to start but it would crank and eventually turn over. My friend recently layed it down and now it wont do anything. Besides some scratches on the plastics and a broken brake handle nothing else happened he layed it down slow and gentle. all fuses are good, and even if i hook it up with jumper cables to the jeep it still wont crank.

You have to check the starter motor, prolly the brushes are gone . Also check the connections from battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter.

Good Luck.

Hello mike, first check all the fuses, make sure none are blown. Check the kill & safety switches. Clean the contacts on the starter button. These are the basics.
I hope this helps.

I have a 91 fzr 600 recently did oil change, spark plugs, didnt ride bike for 2 days then went to ride it today and wont start, thought it was the battery so i jumped it and it started but started running...

you will need to try a new battery, unfortunatly sometimes jumping of a larger battery can spike the regulator, so when the new battery is fitted put a mulimeter across the battery, should read just over 12v engine stopped and rise to 13.5-14v with the engine running.

Bike wont stay running

If the bikes charging system is not working there will be no power to the coils, and no spark (once the battery is drained). Try putting a good, fully charged battery in the bike and check the charging system.

There are certainly several things that could cause the symptoms you describe. Based on the information you have provided that is what I would check first.

Is there such thing as a 1991 fzr600 and a 1991 fzr600r?

1994-5 were the only two years for that bike according to this page. Keep in mind the model/letter designations are not the same everywhere in the world. On the page they also list several years of "Yamaha FZR 600 (reduced effect)" which someone could call an FZR600R, even if that's not exactly what the factory called it.

Please rate this answer a fixya.
