I have a 2005 Toyota Camry LE VVT-I 2.4L. There is a weird whining sound coming from the engine and/or manifold and an odd burning smell. The smell is not antifreeze, oil, or gas/exhaust. There is no smoke. Check oil & coolant levels- normal appearance but dirty. Checked all other fluids. It has 153, 000 miles and poor maintenance. Sound is loud at start-up but continues when engine is hot and gets louder with acceleration.

Check cat converter is working as it should and is not broken or overheating. Run fault codes to check fuel settings and sensors.

SOURCE: Engine running really rough...whine sound when it isn't.

The run rough problem is due a cyl.mis firing,it becaused buy a bad plug, plug wire, coil,or even the ing.module. the servive eng.light flashing is warning you that you have a cyl.misfire that can cause damaget to your catltic converter if you continue to drive it.with may lead to why you think you have a exhaust problem,it may be colgged.

SOURCE: 2005 Chevy Impala exhaust smell

neither one of these would cause gas to leak. sure it is not coolant ? if you think it is gas it is not safe to drive car as it could catch on fire. possible cause would be a leaking injector.

I just bought a 1996 camry and the fan sounds loud and it smells like something is burning, yet the temperture is normal and no smoke comes out. Is that Normal? First Toyota, so I"m not sure if the...

Check the fan on broken blades - even a small part missing can cause unusual sounds. If parts are new / serviced - smell can be due to labels getting hot and emitting slight burning smell. Classic are exhaust pipes with partnumber labels left on there. If he smell stays, something in the interior might come from a crash car which was partly burned.

Jeep 2005 liberty. When I drive my jeep more than 30 miles lots of smoke and burning smell come out. The weird thing is that the oil meter is not indicating it is hot.

Hello....

Sounds like you might have a blown valve cover gasket. That is were I recommend you to start checking. If that is good, check for a leak around the intake manifold.

Good Luck...

A smell of burning rubber is coming from my engine. What is it? Could it be the timing belt? Is it safe to drive any distance? Thanks burning rubber smell from engine

A common cause of a smell like that is a coolant leak.Take a close look around the hoses, clamps, frost plugs and the water pump as it has a weep hole that will leek coolant if the seal is breached. Sometimes all you will see is a stain, but no coolant as small leeks boil away with the engines heat.
If a belt was burning it would be very noisy. The timing belt is cogged so slippage is unlikely. It is possible that a foreign object has gotten on the exhaust manifold like a plastic bag. One last thing I can think of is a wire or something touching a hot surface and melting. Good luck.
