Craftsman LTS 1500 lawn mower - model # 917.28903 started sounding funny while i was cutting VERY high grass. I turned it off immediately and it backfired as it shut off. Wouldn't restart. Waited til next day - turns over. Checked plug - its getting spark and was flooded. Gas blow back evident in air filter compartment. Engine moves freely and seems to have compression. Opened it up and cleaned the carb out thoroughly w/carb cleaner. Put back together - engine started but blowing out lots of air from carb - like a back fire. Turned off. What is likely problem?

I would check the big three first of all. Spark, compression and fuel. Sounds like you have spark and fuel. I would get a compression tester to check actual amount of compression. If all three of those things are good I would check valve lash. You will need make, model and serial number of engine. If you post these I can help find specs for you. Good luck.

i would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.

i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.

Need a troubleshooting manual for a craftsman mod. 917.287070

Went out to cut grass and the blades will not engage and when I put it in gear it does not move. Belts are intact. I cleaned the deck of dirt and grass. Still nothing. Just replaced the cable to engage the blades last year. Cable seems to be working.

I have a craftsman gt 5000 model 917.276220 runs fine but when mowing deck is engaged it wants to die when under a load or cutting tall grass, it will stay running but when i start to cut it bogs down?

not possitive, but sounds like 1 of the bearings on the mower deck is starting to seaze up.I would start with that. Remove the deck and belts and check all the pullys and bearings for free movement.

I have a model 944-604810 riding lawn mower and find that it leaves a trail of cut grass even though it is equipped with a mulching blade and a new mulching cover. It would appear that the grass is not...

yes that is most likely the cause of it, also, you have to cut more often when mulching, and the higher the cutting deck, the more likely the grass will blow out without getting mulched enough. More than likely, the blades are dull, and/or the grass is too high, or possibly even wet if it is high.

I have a Kraftsman 91.5 42 inch cut model #

Safety switch at seat or reverse. Mower will cut of when blades are engaged if you get off the seat or put into reverse. Check these switches for stuck on, damaged, disconnected, or just plain broke. Good luck.

I have a Craftsman Lawn tractor. Blade leaves grass uncut.

Hi Tom,
Check your spindle shafts for loose play. If your bearings are worn out and sloppy, the belts pull the spindle to one side and an angle cut results... close cut grass at outer edge and high in center will leave this grass trail you are describing. I'd replace the bearings next year for sure.
I hope this helps... Good luck!

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
