1994 harley 883 won't stay running with choke in. Then back fires when i have the throttle going? is there a way i can clean the carb myself?

This actually sounds like an intake leak, most likely where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads.

With it at idle, spray a little carb cleaner at the joint between the above mentioned two, and if the idle picks up, there's a leak.

This is common on Harleys, as over time, the rubber seals break down with the engine heat.

Only wants to stay running at high rpm' s put in gear it dies .smells like its getting to much gas,

try to choke air at carburetor a little bit until it stall if rpm go up or running better then you have a vacuum leak ,or carburetor rebuild
hope it helps

I have 1996 sportster 1200 and it back fires when I down shift it has a screaming eagle air filter on it and can't find stock plugs and jets

Hi Rocky, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

Front plug not firing. Have swapped plug & wire, coil. Battery at 12.4 vdc. What might be the problem?

If you've swapped the wire and the plug and it still won't fire, check the compression. You need a minimum of about 75 psi for the cylinder to fire. It should be up about 100-120 psi. If you have the compression and fire, then the only thing left is fuel. You've probably got a vacuum leak at the intake to head junction. Replace the intake gaskets and the carb seal where the carb plugges into the intake.

Good Luck

1982 Yamaha Maxim 650 Has trouble starting: on a good day i can turn the choke midway and it will fire right up, but i have to roll the throttle back and forth to keep it running. after a few minutes...

These bikes need the carbs ajdusted rather frequently, once they get out of adjustment the they juste don'e idle good. Also as old as this one is I can guess that you may have some air leaking around your some of the gaskets and this is why after it warms up it runs better, the gaskets get heated and the swell a little and then start sealing better. It would do you good this winter if you replaced all your intake and carb gaskets and get the carbs adjusted by a trained technicianan you will be ready to roll when summer comes around.

My 2004 sportster back fires when im down shifting or going down the road

If your bike is equipped with a carb and you can get to the idle mixture screw, turn the screw counterclockwise about a half turn. Also, check your exhaust system. If the gaskets at the heads or the crossover are leaking, they will "**** air" inside and cause the backfires though the exhaust.

If the engine is spitting out of the carb, your carb is jetted too lean. If the carb has a #42 jet in it, go up to a #45. You can also raise the needle in the carb by removing the needle and adding a single 3mm flat washer under the needle stop. The small flat washer is approx. 0.023" thick. The stop is the 'swelled' portion of the needle that keeps if from falling through the slide. Put a little grease on the washer and thread the long end of the needle though the washer. Then install the needle in the slide. This "raises" the needle just a bit enriching the mid-range mixture ever so slightly. You're bike will run much better.

Good Luck
Steve
