Question about 1994 Honda VT 1100 C Shadow

1 Answer

Honda Shadow 1100VT will not shift into neutral

I have a 1994 Honda Shadow 1100VT that will not shift into neutral. It seems to be able to shift into the other gears ok with the exception of 1st. You cannot start the bike w/o it being in neutral. I managed to get it into N once after about 15 mins. of trying. After I started it, I was able to go for a short distance before I killed the engine because I was starting out in 2nd or 3rd. I have not been able to get it back into Neutral since. Do I need to adjust the clutch cable or could I have a bad clutch alltogether. Please help! Also, if it is a bad clutch, it it worth the cost to fix on a bike of this age? Thanks

I think that either the slave cylinder has frozen or the Master cylinder seals have degraded to a point where they allow fluid to back over the piston.

The clutch is designed to be engaged all the time, unless you release it with the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder on the engine case. If the clutch plate pack were damaged or burnt up, the clutch wouldn't engage under any circumstances, but that is a fairly rare occurence. If the clutch hydraulics fail, you can't release the clutch. Often, the clutch pack will stick together, when left unridden for a few years, but that results in a no release condition, which would cause the bike to stall when you put it into gear.

The engine power is transmitted to the transmission, through the clutch assembly, then to the cross shaft, where the power flow turns 90 degrees, then heads to the drive shaft and final drive. From there the final drive drive hub splines engage with the rear wheel hub flange.

Sounds like a bent shift fork or two. Replacing the bad shift forks is major surgery and is NOT recommended for the inexperienced mechanic. Several special tools are needed. The top end and gearbox get totally torn down just to get to the shift forks. This is a very expensive repair, guessing $2100 or so at the dealers. Bummer. Contact a few dealers to cofirm my view of the problem and the probable repair cost. The shift forks move left and right as the shift drum is rotated when you lift or push down on the shift pedal.

This is impossible because the width of the crankcase is designed for 5 pairs of sprockets. You need one more pair which I don't thing it can fit inside.

1984 Honda Shadow VT 700 Shift Problem

Based on the information you have provided I suspect a bent shift fork in your transmission. To fix it you will have to take the transmission cover off and get at that fork. Replacing the fork is probably easiest, the labor to get to it is the expensive part.
