Hi, I just took my bike out of storage. I ran the carb out before I put it away last year. I turned the gas on and it fired up just fine then gas started to pour out of the over flow tube. How can I fix this? Thanks Larry

Hi, is this after the bike has been away for the winter, these bikes Are designed to run on modern fuels, the intruder normaly runs fine , good advice would be to replace the spark plugs and drain the fuel from the carburettor float bowls by undoing the drain screws in the bottom of each carb, prior to using the bike after the winter, you may also check the condition of the air filter located on the left hand side of the engine under the chrome cover
If I understand "the petcock was in prime position and it eventually quit dripping." Prime = on Sound like the needle rubber was hard and after a while they soften up enough to cut off the fuel. Keep an eye on it and ride safe. Ken
If the bike ran fine prior to putting it in storage and all you did was drain the fuel and disconnect the battery, its likely moisture ( condensation) developed in the carbs while it sat. this type of thing happens when fuel is drained. Your best bet is to remove the carbs and clean the jets. Its my opinion and experience to put fresh fuel in a bike along with (stable) fuel treatment prior to storing them. With the stable added to the fuel, the fuel will hold good for about 1 year.. Replacing the battery and starting them and letting them warm up to operating temp monthly while in storage is always a good idea..

You drained the tank but did not drain the carbs. Plugs should not need to be changed. Contact your states weights and measures department. There is groundwater and trash getting into the fuel storage tanks. Gas may be leaching into th soil.

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors. Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Fill the tank and use only premium gas. Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.
Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well. < < READ CLOSELY > > Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road. this is a carb model yes? if you stored bike with fuel tap on then it could be your carb floats stuck. there is nowhere on the engine itself that gas would be going. is it dripping from the tank? fuel petcock? fuel pump (probably under the tank) ethanol in gas can completely screw up pumps.
if it's a carb problem shut off gas, remove aircleaner let fuel in carbs evaporate for a week. get some Berrymans B12 spray carb cleaner and get a bunch of it in there, it will break down the gum/varnish from the gas. also get Berrymans B12 fuel additive and put some in the tank. re-assemble and see how it goes.
Forget the wiring. The key thing here is probably the painted gas tank. In all likelihood there was some trash that got into the tank related to the paint job. Do this > Carefully remove the water trap bowl from the petcock, (gas valve), and look inside the bowl. It may have some water in the bottom and some trash on top. Clean the bowl. Next, remove the petcock and clean it as well. Drain the carbs. Turn the gas on and wait a minute for the float bowls to fill.
Give it a try. It may be that the gas from the tank is restricted and can't refill the floats as fast as the engine needs. A second thought is the exhaust pipe. The bike will not run well if the exhaust is partly plugged up. Disconnect the exhaust and tick off the neighbors by going around the block without a muffler. The inside of the muffler may have collapsed when the welding was done.
Between the two solutions I think the exhaust is the more likely.

top off the fuel tank to reduce the amount of air in there, less open space means less room for condensation to form and cause rust in the tank. next drain the float bowls if you dont really like pulling the carbs in the spring. also put the battery on a trickle charger to keep it from going bad.
I'm new to the site and new to carbs. I bought a bike last week that had been sitting in a barn for a couple years the engine hadn't been running in over a year. I was able to get it running the first day after cleaning out the field mouse home occupying the air filter chamber and swapping the old gas for new gas. The bike ran and idled fine but the left carb (dual carb setup Keihin) poured gas from the tube coming out the bottom. I did some research and found out the floats may be stuck. I went ahead and ordered new floats and float bowl gaskets. I took the carbs apart apart as much as I could, using Berryman parts cleaner to soak all the metal parts I could get off. I put everything back together and put the new floats in yesterday. I started the engine and not only is the gas is still pouring out the bottom of the left carb, but now the bike is idleing very fast. The idle adjustment is backed out completely. When putting the carbs back together, I screwed all the jets back in all the way. I screwed in the Pilot Air screw, the one with the spring, all the way in, then backed it out 1 1/2 turns. Not sure if this has anything to do with the idle. As far as the floats go, does it sound like I need to replace the float valves too?
