The sportster only has two oil fills. The engine oil fill is through the dip stick hole I use mobile 1 15-50. The primary fill is the upper access plate on the primary cover I use mobile 1 gear lube 75-90.

Drain oil on sportster1200xl

Warm up the engine so the oil will flow freely. There is a hose from the oil tank that hangs just below the bottom of the bike. Loosen the hose clamp and pull out the plug. Make sure you have a catch pan underneath to catch the old oil. Open the filler to allow air into the tank and facilitate draining of the oil. Once drained, replace plug and hose clamp. Remove and replace filter. Fill new filter with oil before putting on bike. Do not over tighten new filter. Spin it down until the gasket touches, then hand turn a half to three quarters of a turn. Refill bike with Harley oil 3.6 quarts. Make note of mileage and date of oil change. Happy riding.

How to drain engine crankcase oil 2004 1200 sportster

Run the bike to get it to normal operating temperature. Put an thin oil pan on the ground under the center of the engine. Look for the little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the bike with a plastic plug in it and held in the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp and save to reuse if it is the screw type. Then pull the plug out and open up the oil fill cap on right side by the seat.

I have a 2007 sportster 1200 costom do you check the oil on the kick stand or standing stright up Thank You Vicki

On your Sporty, check the oil with the bike on the kickstand. The dipstick has two marks on it. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill your oil tank. Keep the oil between the two lines. I suggest that as long as you can see the oil on the dipstick when the engine is cold, do not add oil. Ride the bike to get the engine to full temp and then check the oil and add if necessary.

Also, if the bike has been sitting for an extended period of time and the oil checks low, do not add oil. When the bike sits for a long time (three months or so) the oil can seep past the check valve and "oil sump" the bottom end. When you start the engine,it will pump this oil back to the tank. If you fill the tank before you start the engine, you'll have a major mess.

Good Luck

Level for primary oil required

Well, if depends on which model bike you're talking about, a Big Twin or a Sportster. On the Sportster, simply pour in a quart. Some Sportsters have an "oil level drain hole". A plug either on lower front part of the outer primary or on the rear end of the primary. Take the plug out, fill until oil just starts to run out and stop.

On the Big Twins, remove the derby cover, stand the bike straight up, and fill until the oil level just barely touches the lowest part of the clutch spring. The spring is a round spring that is usually darker in color than the surrounding aluminum clutch drum. Do not overfill as this will make your clutch drag and you will not be able to get your bike into neutral with the engine running. Depending on year and model the primary will take anywhere between 36-44 ounces of oil.

Good Luck

How to do a transmission oil chage on a 1980 sportster

There is a drain plug under the back end of the primary cover. Drain the oil and refill through the primary chain inspection hole. There is a "fill level plug" on the outer primary towards the front. Remove this plug and fill until oil runs out of the hole. Should take almost a whole quart when bike is standing straight up.

Good Luck

I want to change the oil and i want to know how much the bike takes oil i have the yzf r1 1998.thanks

just put in three quarts keep bike level start bike for a minute turn off then when its still up right fill it only to 3/4 of the way up the sight glass or stick this will help to keep from over filling. If you over fill you case the crank splashes the oil around and stirs it up and make bubbles or air particles and this could damage your main bearing so its always better to under fill than over fill.please rate my expertise i like to hear feedback.

Where is the fill spot on the primarry chain on a 79 xlh 1000

Some of the Sportsters had a "level test hole" that had a screw in it up near the front of the primary cover. Look just beneath your shifter lever and there should be a screw in the primary. Remove the screw and fill the primary unitl oil runs out of the hole with the bike standing straight up.

Specs and oil capacity

Most owners of the old Ironheads try to use the oils that were used when they were built. They use straight 50 weight when the weather is cold and 60 weight when temps are hot. But, one could use 10W50 oil in them. I would not use synthetic as any oil leaks will intensify with the use of synthetic oil. The XLH, XLX, and XLS tanks hold three quarts with the exception of the XR1000 which hold two quarts.
