    bad surge at steady throttle like its to lean

    low rpm heavy load loud bang in air box and stalls dead

    no load throttle rev up has bark or sound of ign fireing in airbox

    one intake valve was tight no clearance now reshimmed at 4 thou.
    still same problem
    plug is dry and nice tan color

Check the spark plug. It may be wet and when it is, check the impulser. maybe its deliberating the current slow.

Hi, Kelly if your carburetor is:
COUGHING is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals.
POPPING on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec.
SPITTING is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean.
BACKFIRING is usually caused by a sticky/tight intake valve or a timing issue, 180 degrees out or cam chain off 1or 2 teeth.

Hi, I have a 2004 BMW X3 3.0L & have pulled four codes;


Check PCV valving to the intake manifold most often the diaphragm is broken which allows extreme vacuum to be applied to the crankcase.Will cause many codes relating to lean fuel mixture bad map readings fuel trims way off. With the engine idling remove the oil fill cap and note the vacuum. It should be very slight.;almost undetectable. I know there are specs relation to in/hg but if you don't have the tester the spec is unusable. Replacing the valve is difficult/expensive. I have replaced many and they never get easier.

What would cause insufficient flow to my egr valve? (i just replaced it)


ok , the valve is easy to test and clean but is only 10% of the path.

my bark test works.
i remove the EGR valve see 2 ports there. (twin holes)
one is vacuum side, (intake) the other is exh. side.
i plug the vacuum side, and start engine
this is what i call the bark test. if the exh port barks load ,it may be good. if dead, or weak, it is, fix that now. clean path.
if that works ok , i then check the vacuum path port of carbon blockage. i rod it out with a flex cable.ask
the electric side test are below.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Engine oil system overfilled.
2. Piston rings worn past service specs.
3. Broken piston rings.
4. Piston pin retaining clip failure.
5. Cracked piston.
6. Broken piston ring lands.
7. Hole in the piston.
8. Valve/guide clearance worn past service specs.
9. Worn out valve seals.
10. Crushed or loose valve seal.
11. Gouges in cylinder walls.
12. Cracked cylinder or head.
13. Blown head gasket.
14. Crankcase breather blocked or hose pinched.

Backfires thru carb.spits and hesitates


have you add anything or adjusted anything? spray some soapy water at the intake seals while the bike is running (idling) if the idle changes you have intake seal leak and if you have added an new air filter other than stock you may be running to lean and need to rejet

intake valve clearance 0.10-0.15mm
exhaust valve clearance 0.17-0.22mm

Valve specs for VT 500 honda shadow 1983


Hi,
Your valve clearances should be:
Intake .08-.12 mm (.003-.005 in)
Exhaust .12-.16 mm (.005-.006 in)
I usually start all gaps in the middle of given specs, then fine tune from there.

Have 2005 ford freestyle. i towed to my shop, scanner showed 2 codes,bank1 lean, bank2 lean. told me to look for vaccuum leak. found dime size hole in upper intake plennum near intake opening. also egr...


Measure the exhaust back pressure. Do you have an old O2 sensor? If so just break the ends off of it so that just the tube is left sticking thru the center. Install it in one of the O2 ports and hook a vacuum/pressure guage to it. Should read les than 1 psi at idle and no more than 3 to 4 psi at WOT.
