I have an 82 xj 650. Need to know the correct procedure for tightening the cam chain. And, any advice/hints regarding starting and bad idling would be very helpfull. Have thoroughly cleaned the carbs, still very lumpy at idle.

Replace.
and when you replace, also replace gears, as a new chain will eat up the old gears, and vise-versa.

Cam chain adjustment procedure ?

cold ! tensioner should be able to retract back by turning a screw of some sort and you hold it in this position as you fit it and bolt on then release and it will reset and only turn engine in direction of rotation as if engine was to run and see if all parts turn ok and comes back to tdc after several rotations and all marks line up !

I am trying to determine if the adjustment bolt located below the carbs between the second and third cylinders is for setting the cam chain tension and how to set it . There is some cam chain noise at low...

Yes, it is the cam chain tensioner. With the engine off, just loosen the tensioner lock bolt then strongly tap a few times on the tensioner casing with a screwdriver handle. This will free up the spring loaded tensioner. Now just re=tighten the tensioner lock bolt and you're done. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_157.gif

Timing chain tensioner adjustment

all v twin engines are noisy, if you could totally silence the exhaust noise, you would be horrified how awful the motor sounds, it could probably do with the cam chain tensioner ADJUSTING. i wouldn't think it would need replacing. unfortunately the manual only recomends this being done by a qualified tech, i have a xvs 650 with same trouble. i would adjust myself if i could find out the correct tollerences.
