There is not a off position i have a 1999 GSF bandit 1200 which i had the same air box gas problem. the positions are On, Reserve, and Pri. if its leaking back into the air box the petcock is not working correctly pull the tank off or disconnect the gas line and vacume line fuel should not leak out if it does the diaphram is riped replace the petcock. Also if you airfilter got soaked it needs to be replaced

I too had a bad petcock on my Bandit. I replaced it with one that has an actual off position and then just plugged the vacuum port on the carb that the petcock hose goes to. I tried a rebuild kit on my original, and it still leaked. They are a crappy design.

Easiest way is to start it... turn it one way and wait... if it doesn't quit in about a minute... turn it all the other way and wait... it should quit running.

Possibly the gas has flooded out the carburetor. Happened to me.

I don't know if it's the vacuum fuel pump leaking gas or the carburetor valves sticking slightly open. My solution was to have an on-off petcock installed upstream of the carburetor, just in front of the right side chrome side plate. I turn off the gas whenever I park the bike. So far that has worked, although I have other (unrelated) problems with this bike. The mechanic had to dry out the carb and check the crankcase oil in case gas had leaked into it.

This bike has a petcock system that is always on. It has normal and reserve positions (down and up) which let gas flow to upstream of the fuel pump and then a center prime position which feeds directly to the carburetor, in case vacuum from the starter cranking doesn't drive enough gas through the fuel pump, after the carburetor has dried out from sitting idle.

My airbox is full of oil


Check your oil level. If it is too high, your oil may be full of gasoline. Your vacuum petcock may be leaking gas past a diaphragm or your float bowl needles are sticking and are over flowing gas into the engine. This causes your oil to be diluted with gas, the crankcase becomes too full, and the gasoline diluted oil is then blowing through the breather tube and into the air box. Needles sticking in the carburetors can happen at any time even to new motorcycles. If you have vacuum petcocks inspect the vacuum diaphragms for leaking. Clean the carburetors and replace the float needles if they show wear. Change the gas fouled oil and filter. Change your air filter if it is paper and has become oil fouled. Hope this helps.

Check your oil level. If your vacuum petcock or float bowls are over flowing gas into the engine, your oil is diluted with gas, the crankcase is too full, gasoline diluted oil is blowing through the breather tube into the air box, and from the air box into the carburetor. Needles sticking in the carburetors can happen at any time even to new motorcycles. If you have vacuum petcocks inspect the vacuum diaphragms for leaking. Clean the carburetors and replace the float needles if they show wear. Change the gas fouled oil and filter. Hope this helps.

tsomething is sticking the float in the float bowl(bottom of carborator) sometimes you can tap on it lightly and it will unstic also may be a bad gasket always turn the petcock to the off position when noy riding

First check to see if the oil level in your crankcase is too high. If you have a vacuum petcock malfunction (hole in the diaphragm) or if the fuel petcock is left in the prime position and a float needle sticks, then you get you get gas running into the cylinders, past the rings, and into the oil.
When you start your motorcycle the oil/gas mixture has no place to go, the crankcase is too full, and the mixture exits through the crankcase breather into the air box where it will ruin a paper air filter. Always turn your fuel petcocks off when not driving. If the petcock diaphragms are bad rebuild the petcock with K&L rebuild kits or replace the fuel petcocks with new ones. If the float needles in the carburetors are bad or sticking, take the carburetors apart, clean them, and replace any worn or damaged parts You will have to change your gasoline saturated oil for it will no longer properly lubricate your motor.
Just a note: in 1983 brand new Honda's would fill there engines in gas. All the components were clean and new. This can happen to any machine in any condition at any time. When not riding always turn off the fuel vales never leave them in the prime position.

Either the vacuum operated petcock is stuck in the flow position as well as a float needle is stuck in the open position. Two things would have to be wrong so that the fuel would over flow the carburetors and run past the piston rings into the crankcase. Or, more likely, the vacuum diaphragm inside the fuel petcock is leaking and the fuel is flowing down the vacuum line into the engine. I would start by inspecting the vacuum fuel petcock. If you unplug the vacuum line and gas is dripping from the vacuum line then you will need to rebuild or replace the fuel petcock.

What you are dealing with is a vacuum petcock with a bad vacuum diaphragm , in this case fuel is bypassing the petcock via the vacuum line and filling the engine (oil) with gasoline.
If you have a standard petcock that is leaking (not shutting off properly) or just left in the on position a stuck float needle will also fill your engine (oil) with gasoline. This can happen with a clean carburetor and a good float needle. It just sticks and you have to change your oil. If you have the kind of fuel petcock that allows you to turn it off when not in use , always turn off your gas when not riding.
You will have to change your oil if it is fouled with gasoline. I suspect a vacuum operated petcock is at fault. With standard petcocks I have seen new motorcycles in perfect order stick a float needle ( Kei Hin Carburetors ) and fill there engines and air boxes with gas/oil mix. On vacuum petcocks the diaphragm that shuts off the fuel flow is usually leaking and at fault.

Well there only one way the fuel can get into the crankcase and that's from the fuel tank. The petcock must be draining and the float needles are not stopping the fuel flow. Do you have a prime position on the petcock? If so do not run the bike in the position. Try topping the tank off with gas and letting it sit for a while and see is the gas has gone down and then check the crankcase and see if there's fuel in it again. i still say its got to be your petcock.

this is a carb model yes? if you stored bike with fuel tap on then it could be your carb floats stuck. there is nowhere on the engine itself that gas would be going. is it dripping from the tank? fuel petcock? fuel pump (probably under the tank) ethanol in gas can completely screw up pumps.

if it's a carb problem shut off gas, remove aircleaner let fuel in carbs evaporate for a week. get some Berrymans B12 spray carb cleaner and get a bunch of it in there, it will break down the gum/varnish from the gas. also get Berrymans B12 fuel additive and put some in the tank. re-assemble and see how it goes.
