Wouldn't be the timing belt. Could be the idle controls, or the MAF sensor, or a dirty air or fuel filter.
Be sure and check for trouble codes. Pull the spark plugs and check their look and the plug gap. A cylinder that is firing good (good compression, good air/fuel mixture, good ignition) will have a tan or gray look with very little deposits. A lot of black, sooty deposits indicates running rich, a blistered, white pug indicates running lean. And black, wet deposits indicates oil fouling from worn rings, most likely. Check your plugs, probably good, but see if they need replacing.

my 97 a4 would start and then die, i had it diagnosed as the immobiliser in the dashboard costing about £600 !!! The battery went flat trying to start it so i took it off the car and charged it up, when i put it back on the car before i took it to get fixed i thought i would try it 1 more time and "hey presto" it started and ran and has not missed a beat since ! That was 2 years ago, it was like the computer had re-set itself with the battery removed for charging, i hope this may be of some help.

The 1993 90 instrument cluster is very sensitive. Even having bulbs out can mess it up. You should consider replacing the ignition switch. It is easy you can do it yourself, do NOT let Audi dealer's service tell you it's $500 to do it. You can get the part for less than 30 bucks on ebay. Undo the screws under the steering wheel, take off the plastic, take out the 2 screws on the instrument cluster, take out the cluster enough to see the ignition switch. THis is the tricky part: get a small screw driver and LOOSEN the small screws that keep the ignition switch in place.Replace. Re-tighten, put it all back and you're done.
Ignition switch is EVERYTHING in this car. Oh, do not by the switch with the pink plastic where the key would go, buy the WHITE.

Have you tried replacing the starter? I know starters can go bad if the car is not started or run for a long time.
I am getting the same car, with the same issue.. it sat for 2 yrs and won't start.
My mechanic told me it is probably a starter.

Sound's like a bad alternator, you can check the alternator by measuring the voltage on the battery when the car is started, it should measure above 12.6 volt's but not higher than 14.5 volt's, check the drive belt tension, a lose or wore drive-belt could cause problem's with the alternator charging the batery, check the battery terminal's for corrosion, along with the connection's of the battery cable's.
Hope this help's, good luck.
