Check carburetor & air filter. Clean off all dirt
and clean air filter. check age of gas. Cannot be more than 30 days old. Make
sure to use fresh gas w/synthetic 2-cycle oil @ 40:1 ratio (1 gal.) Gas to 3.2
oz. Oil). Do not use old or stale oil/gas mixture. Before putting in
fresh fuel, press the primer several times. A small amount of gas might show up
in the fuel tank. Remove fuel. With carburetor cleaner, spray carburetor.
Put in small amount of fresh fuel. Just enough to cover the fuel filter. Then
press primer with fuel cap off, and watch to see if fuel is flowing smoothly.
If not or if plastic primer bubble does not come back to original shape after
pressing, then you have to take carburetor apart and clean or get new
carburetor.

If the problem only happens when the engine is cold, a bad electric sensor is likely to blame. If the car stalls even when the engine is warm, the cause is likely a faulty electric fuel pump.
installed new fuel pump and filter in 97 cavalier 2.2 the car will run for a couple seconds and shut off if you spary it with starting fluid it will stay running
there are 2 sensor on the carb . you may need to replace both to find out whiche one it is . try this also give it gas while starting and when it starts you will have to keep your foot on the gas a little to keep it running if it runs that way its one of the 2 senors .
check your fuel pressure and also check your plug gaps and make sure you have a stong spark, you say it stays running once started on ether? does it run well or poorly? is it drivable or not please explain in more detail -please rate -jeff
