1982 and 1983 FXR inner primary housings are unique to those two years (rubber mounted motor with 5 speed tranny.) This item seems to be a bit difficult to locate. Can't find any after market inner primaries anywhere that I have looked. Mine has the top front ear broken. I will be having it tigged. If you can save yours - I would.

If you come across one at a swap meet somewhere I would grab it!

1996 Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy engine case primary lip broke

Hi, Dwayne, I have run into this situation many times and it's usually caused by incorrect engine and transmission alignment and or loose bolts. If most of the lip is still intact then you can silicone a new o-ring into the inner primary let it dry for 24 hours then apply another layer of silicone on the exposed side of the o-ring and install the inner primary with bolts finger tight or you can grind off the remaining lip and install a special gasket kit for this situation. Starting in the middle and working outwards in a criss-cross or circular pattern torque inner primary bolts to 7 ft. lbs. grab the main shaft of the transmission and turn it to make sure it spins free, repeat the process with the torque wrench set at 14 ft. lbs. and spin the main shaft repeat the procedure a 3rd and final time with the wrench set at 20 ft. lbs. then spin the main shaft.

Where can I find the oil drain plugs on my 1989 Harley FXR? I'm doing a complete oil change. Ive looked at tons of different sites but the plugs don't match the location my bike.

Hi David, for a 1989 FXR the engine oil drains out of the oil tank via a rubber hose located at the rear bottom left corner, the transmission drains from a large threaded plug located on the bottom center of the transmission case, the primary chaincase oil drains from a small threaded pipe plug located on the outside of the primary cover directly below dead center of the clutch inspection cover. Good luck

I have a 1984 h/d fxr I got a new outter primary and it is getting stuck in the starter bearing I have oiled it and greased it but it still gets stuck,, anything you can think of

I don't understand exactly what you mean by the bearing getting "stuck" in outer primary. The starter shaft has bearing race on the of it. This bearing race is also a nut that holds the shaft and it's parts together. The outer primary cover should have either a bearing or a bushing in it. The bushing or bearing in the outer primary provides support for the starter shaft while starting the engine.

Now, take the starter shaft fork loose and remove the shaft. Put the shaft into the bearing or bushing and make sure it turns freely. If not, you'll need to take the shaft and the outer primary to an automotive machine shop and have the bushing fitted to the "nut" on the end of the shaft. If you have a bearing in the outer primary, the nut must be turned down to fit it but neither of these cases are common, matter of fact, I've never heard of it having to be done.

If the "nut" on the outer end of the shaft seems to fit the bearing or bushing in the outer primary like it should, then your problem is an alignment problem. The outer primary, inner primary, and starter assembly are not aligned. There should be a couple of alignment pins in the inner primary that aligns the outer primary when installed. There are also two alignment pins in the starter gear housing on the backside of the inner primary. You may have to remove these pins in order to get everything to align properly.

Welcome to the world of foreign made Harley parts. Regrettably, we have to rely on foreign made parts to keep the older bikes running. Not all the parts fit like they should. I once spent three days trying to get a set of kick starter gears to work on a 72 FLH. I never did get them to work but managed to use the clutch gear to repair the transmission but I had to modify it to get it to work.

Can I take off the left side mid controls, and put a plain inspection cover on a 1984 fxr or do I have to cap it

Your 1984 FXR has the mid mount shifter on it. You can change over to a forward shifter and eliminate you mid mount shifter. To do this, you must pull the outer primary, the clutch and primary chain assembly and the inner primary to get the shifer shaft out of the primary. You must pull the inner primary off to get the old shift shaft out. You can put a plain inspection cover on the outer primary but you've got to close the hole in the backside of the inner primary. I use a 1/2" freeze plug that you can get at almost any auto parts house. Just measure the hole to make sure of the size you need. I'm not out in the shop or I could tell you for sure. Coat the freeze plug (welch plug) with some non-hardening PermaTex and drive it into the hole. Should you ever wish to change it back to stock, simply drive the plug out and you're back in business.

Good Luck

I purchased a new gas tank for my '82 yamaha vision 550. the replacement tank is from an '83 and there seems to be 3 inlets on the '83 tank(fuel or vaccum) and 2 on the '82 tank i'm replacing. Just...

The 83 has a fuel return line intended to prevent vapor lock , by circulating cooler gas through he fuel pump. You can cap off the fuel return hose and it will cause no problems. The carbs on the 82 differ quite a bit from the 83 and the petcocks are not interchangeable, with out a lot of work.
