Yeah I had to go directly to a Harley/Buell dealer to get manual. The sensor is behind the cover for the belt at the engine. Let me explain. On the foot brake side of the engine there is a black cover over the pulley for the drive belt. It has three torquex screws holding it on.The sensor is above and behind this on the engine itself. It is held with one bolt.

Can not find these codes 1) PPU 2) 82883 Can anyone tell what these are

Hi, Scott 82883 is not an error code it is the current PPU (pulses per unit) number that has been downloaded to your ECM and is used to calibrate your speedometer. If you change tire size and or gearing your speedometer will become inaccurate and you need to recalibrate the speedometer, this can be done at your local Harley dealer or you can go online and purchase a calibration tool that is plug n play for around $100 there is a difference between stock EFI calibrations that may be causing some of the speed signal related issues you encounter. The stock calibrations for 2004 & later model years will write a PPU Value to the ECM. The current stock calibrations for 2003 & earlier models do not. The PPU Value is what controls the speed displayed on the speedometer, which in turn controls the turn signal cancellation. If you have downloaded a 2004 & later stock calibration into an ECM it should not be used on a 2003 or earlier motorcycle; the speedometer and turn signals will not function correctly even after updating the VIN and calibration to match the vehicle.

Speedometer, turn signals and horn quit working, speedometer light doesn't work

Hi, Brian I do not know what type of bike you have but this is what I tell all my Harley friends with electronic speedometers the vast majority of speedometer issues is caused by the speed sensor and or the wiring, a faulty speedometer sensor and or connection will automatically interrupt proper turn signal and flasher operation. On Sportsters the sensor is located on top of the engine case behind the rear cylinder, on big twins, it's located on the right side of the transmission case between the starter end cap and the transmission top cover. Remove the bolt/***** that secures the sensor and lift the sensor out of the case. Inspect it for damage and contamination, if there appears to be no damage wipe the end of the sensor clean and reinstall, you can go for a short quick test ride to see if the speedo is working. If the issue still exists grab your test light and unplug the harness connector from the sensor, check for power (red wire) and ground (black wire) continuity coming from the speedo, there is also the connector that plugs into the speedometer, also, look for corroded, broken or loose pin/sockets. If everything checks out OK then replace the speed sensor. Good luck and have a nice day

Replaced input and output speed sensors for erratic speedometer. Now the speedometer remains at 0. Anyone have a suggestion on what else could be wrong?

input and out put speed sensors tell the TCM and the ECM the difference between engine rpms and transmission input roms so that the correct gear ratio can be selected
A speedo sensor reads the out put shaft (drive line ) shaft and refers to road speed for speed and odometer readings and to calculate the fuel consumption rate
it is possible that you have replaced the wrong sensor
Talk with an accredited transmission specialist shop and have the problem diagnosed

SPEEDOMETER QUIT

You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working.
The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.

Broken speedometer on 1997 ford explorer

does your cruise control work? If not, check the wiring from the VSS to the speedo cluster. Check VSS connector closely for pin pudhout or corrosion

Sometimes, the VSS siganl is converted by the instrument cluster and sent to the PCM and speedo.

Check engine light on?

Speedometer
The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731). This sensor is also used to sense vehicle speed for the engine management system and to regulate the cruise control when equipped.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vehicle Speed Sensor The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Figure 53) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect type sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling.

Bad speed sensor

I recently sold my wife's Buell Blast to a nice young girl who called to say the speedometer has stopped working.  I did the speedo diagnostic and get a 02set code which will clear if the reset is held in but comes back immediately when you let go of the reset.  I removed the speed sensor and cleaned it but it still doesn't work and I realized that while the odometer does display accurate numbers and toggles between odometer and trip readings the mileage does not advance when the bike is ridden.  Any imput you may give will be appreciated.  As an aside I have a 92 RS1200.  Parts are hard if not impossible to find. Last year my rear caliper died and after much research found a comparable replacement.  Anyone who needs help with pre-Harley Buells can write me at any time. The only thing you can do about the speed sensor is buy a new one.  I got one this year for my 03 Firebolt as it was bad too and my speedo and tach didn't work when I first bought the bike. ,,,
