If its the 1.6litre 4afe. Turn the crankshaft to TDC, ie. Tiny slit on the crank pulley should be straight underneath the 0deg mark. The cams, intake cam is driven off the exhaust cam by means of two gears. Installation marks. They have 4 holes in front of the gears. Front being closest to timing belt. Upon installation one hole in each gear should face upwards and the other holes should face each other between the gears. On the exhaust cam pulley there is a hole drilled through it, ie. timing mark. It should face up. Directly inline with the grove in the first cam cap. If you have 1.6litre 4age engine. Between cam gears and cylinder head there should be a plate. groves in cam gears should face the groves in the the plate.
22R 4 cyl.Get # 1 piston to TDC(stick the harmonic balancer back on temporary)setting the mark to O on the timing tab, pull the balancer back off and slip the chain on the crank gear after finding the single dot on the chain.Set the mark on the cam gear at very top and put the chain mark on that mark on the cam gear.Stick the cam gear back on the cam and bolt it back on.Your set now.
there should be marks on each gear like a dash ( - ) on one side of each gear. Those marks should be lined up directly pointing at each other so that the sides of the each gear with the mark are right next to each other..
To be honest you may end up taking this car to a dealership to have the timing set. Anytime you mess with timing belt/chain cam gears on a volvo, you need a special Volvo tool to lock the cams down. This is why alot of independent shops will not service the timing belts on a volvo. But i will try to explain this a little to you. If you are lucky the marks will be there.
On the top cover after pulling off the front cover there are notches in the black cover and in the gears. On the crank there are marks on two of the high spots and in between that is TDC. Set the cam gears up and then look down to identify the marks on the crank gearI hope this helps
To align both sets of timing marks, turn engine crankshaft to the right with belt on cam and crank. Once you have done this the crankshaft alignment mark (on front of crankshaft gear) will line up with mark to the rear of gear on engine block. The two cam gear timing marks should be alines across from one another. The right cam gear is the intake side and the left side is the exhaust side. After removing the belt turn the exhaust cam down 1/2 notch. Timing mark on exhaust 1/2 notch down from the intake side. Install new belt and recheck everything to make sure it's all correct. Hope this will help you.
Hi
There are two marks on the bottem of the cam gear that need to be flush with the top edge of the head (mating surffice of valve cover). And the key way on the crank needs to be turned up inline with the cam shaft.
Sam
The timing marks to use are spot-drilled on the faces of the timing gears.
The timing marks on the camshaft gears must align side-by-side, and as closest as possible on the Toyota,Camry 2.2 engine.
