Transmission is done, burnt up,you know that
Has to come out & be rebuilt

Testimonial: "I was hoping you would NOT say that.. :/ there are no sensors or the computer under where the linkage ends and connects to that I could check just in case??"

There is a reason the fluid was burnt you that Google why trans fluid burns Internal problem from slipping & overheating the fluid & ruining the clutches A transaxle doesn't last mote than 80.000 if you chnage fluid every 3 years & have no problems

Your lockup torque converter is bad I believe. When you shift from Park into any gear it will die.

Manual trans in a 97 golf all forward gears work fine. Shifter will go into reverse slot grinds like its almost there but wont engage

This possibly an issue with a damaged gear synchro or your linkage needs adjusting. This is a video that explains in detail how to adjust your shift linkage and it should cover your model and year of vw. If the problem still persists then you could be looking at the bad gear and will need to have the transmission serviced.

I have a 97 chevy cavalier it is stuck in reverse and will not shift into any other gear.

Have you checked the linkage at the transmission itself as that could be where the problem is.

To be honest with you Jeeps are notoriuse for their transmission problems. Most likely you have a shift solonoid in the transmission bad. I would have it checked before it gets worse to try and prevent internal problems.

Good Luck and I hope this helps you.

Locked up in reverse

Sorry man but my bet is that you burnt the bands in the tranny and it will eventually spread to the rest of the gears. So I would start saving.

I have a 97 VW Golf auto trans, I have no reverse gear, no noise when placed in gear it just wont move, all forward gears work fine, any ideas for me

Check your fluid level to make sure its up to the specified level, then I'd be checking out your linkage from your shifter inside the car right to the transmission, it sounds like to me your linkage may be worn enough to put the vehicle in drive but not reverse. The linkage bushings are a common problem on vdubs. See if you can put the car in reverse by moving the linkage arm directly attached to the transmission (make sure you have someone in the car with the brakes on or caulk the wheels) if it does go into reverse when you manually move the direct linkage arm at the transmission then replace your linkage bushings, if not then the only other problem would be a transmission internal problem. Good luck
