1987 FXST I went for a ride Saturday and stopped for a beer, when I went to leave all I could hear from my bikes starter system was the relay, so I crossed the soleniod and nothing just sparks no engaging of the bendix or anything. I thought it was the Soleniod, so I picked up one today and nothing changed. On further thinking I opened up my primary, thought the shaft might have been partially engaged when I removed it so I closed it back up, started drove around the block, came home and once shut off, it did the same thing, tapped on the primary with a piece of wood and hammer, it started, but only that once (i stopped out love for the bike) any ideas out there?

SOURCE: No starter engagement 2005 Silverado 1100

I would seriouly look at the starter clutch, the 1100 yamaha cruiser motors are notorious for this problem way back when the same motor was in the viragos and the xvs 1100 vstars, yamaha have tried to fix the prob over the years but stillhavn't got it right. if it just spins and whirs without engaging the engine, but sometime will kick in engagement, it sounds like your starter clutch is on it's way out. they cost from yamaha around $450- 500 ea plus around $350 to fit you have to include a $30 gasket in all that.

SOURCE: starter will not engage-soleniod just clicks-

I had this problem last year. I was told by a reputable Yamaha service technician that I could "jump" the leads on the solenoid to unstick it. It worked. However, in retrospect, I wish I would have just replaced the solenoid, given that it is a relatively cheap component (~$40 new). Since then, I had the sticking and clicking problem again this past March right at the beginning of the season, and during my attempt to repeat the success, I shorted out the bike because I got careless about what my disconnected wires touched on the bike. Shame on me. So I'd recommend replacing the solenoid.

SOURCE: starter motor turn but wont engage

It has a starter clutch on the fly wheel. You will need to remove the left side case cove to access it. You will need to pull the flywheel with a puller as the starter clutch is behind the flywheel

SOURCE: Backing up with reverse gear bike just stopped. It

Pull out on the lever and push it toward the front of the bike, hard if necessary. Rock the bike while pushing. If the bike comes out of gear it should start. The bike will not start while the lever is up.
Probably need to replace the switch behind the lever. Don't test it, just replace it.

I have an07 street glide I need the wiring diagram for the starting switch system

Is the bike in gear with the jiffy stand down? Safety circuit will stop bike from starting. Also, is the run switch turned on (the one on the right hand handlebar switch)? Have you any error codes in the speedometer diagnostics? The start switch on the bars do fail so could be that. Listen for a click from the start relay under the side cover while pressing the start switch. No click could mean faulty start switch. If you here a click, then check for 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solinoid. If missing, starter relay may be at fault. If present, the starter solinoid is faulty. Listen for the fuel pump running after turning on run switch. Pump should run for a few seconds and then stop. If pump not running, then run switch may be at fault.

I have a 2002 FXST H-D, I replaced the battery about 2 weeks ago because of starting problems. Today I rode to work and it was raining off and on, (not sure if that matters) but went to start the bike when...

Make sure you have not knocked loose the alternator cable. Usually close to the oil filter. Sometimes when removing the oil filter it will come loose and you won't be charging your battery while you ride.

How to chopper wire the starter button and solenoid on an 1987 fxlr harley.

You'll need to wire in a starter relay. The relay has three terminals. One terminal connects to the battery, one connects to the starter button, and the other connects to the small terminal on the starter solenoid.

On the starter solenoid, the long post connects to the postive post of the battery, the shorter post connects to the starter motor, and the smaller center go to the starter relay.

My 2005 Suzuki Boulevard Will not start most of the time. I have replaced the battery, pulled and checked the Starter Relay, Decompression Relay and the combination Turn Signal/side stand Relay, I have...

Same problem here ... 2008 C90T ... dealer no help ... in 3rd or 4th, ignition off, force it to roll backwards until you hear the piston shift ... should start then. Told it's the rear piston stopping at or near top dead center, but also told adjust the decompression will "solve" the issue; anyway, a rolling forward-start in 4th will work, too, otherwise try rolling the bike backwards until you hear, and you will know when the piston moves and then it will start.

Some times the engine will not turn over

Yes, I would agree that you've got a bad starter relay. As for the engine quitting while you are riding, that could be many different things - but when combined with the starting problem, I would suspect a bad electrical connection at the relay - or between the battery and the relay. I don't know for sure about your bike but generally most bikes have the main power connector near - or at - the starter relay. From there the power goes directly to the fuses and gets distributed to the rest of the bike from that point.
Again, I am not intimately familiar with your bike, but to find the relay, just follow the clicking sound. Usually, the relay isn't too far from the battery or the main fuse box. The starter relay will always have two large cables attached to it - one from the positive side of the battery, the other going to the starter motor.

Starting problems

I would start by checking your starter switch, ignition, the starter relay and then the kickstand saftey switch. There is a few things that happen when you start the bike. One, you depress the starter switch, the headlight shuts off, the starter relay closes and the bike starts. I'm not sure how or what creates this but I bet there is a relay somewhere along the line that cuts power to your headlight when you start the bike and its faulty and is causing both of the problems. It may stuck somewhere in the middle instead of open or closed. I would also suggest jumping your starter relay to see if it starts. If it doesnt, then it must in your ignition switch. Find your starter relay, there should be one red wire leading to it, another leading away. Very important... make sure your bike is in neutral.. the starter will fire not matter what. Take flat headed screw driver and connect the two post. It should fire right up. If it does, the lights should come on. It may be just enough to get that stuck relay unstuck.
